NRL 2016: South Sydney Rabbitohs extend Newcastle Knights' miserable season

South Sydney have extended their dominance of Newcastle to a seventh successive game with an emphatic 34-12 win at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The defeat also extended Newcastle's club-record losing streak to 17 games.

Rabbitohs sour Knights' home finale

South Sydney have continued their winning ways and heaped on Newcastle's misery with a 34-12 victory in Jeremy Smith's last game at Hunter Stadium.

Souths, who were playing in Newcastle for the first time since 2012, had won the previous six games between the two clubs by a combined scoreline of 227-60.

One of their chief tormentors has been Rabbitohs skipper Greg Inglis, who opened the scoring in the ninth minute when he chased an Adam Reynolds grubber kick and planted it millimetres from the dead-ball line.

It was the champion fullback's 12th try in 13 games against the Knights.

Souths' next try came 20 minutes later from winger Alex Johnston, whose strike rate against Newcastle is even more impressive that his skipper's.

After a backline shift, Inglis threw the final pass to Johnston, who crossed untouched for his eighth try against the Knights in four games.

Two minutes before half-time, Souths extended their lead to 16-0 when Reynolds chipped infield and five-eighth Cody Walker caught it cleanly to race in between the posts.

Four minutes after the resumption, Souths centre Aaron Gray crashed over, and Reynolds' conversion made it 22-0 to the visitors.

The crowd of 15,212 found reason to cheer in the 54th minute, when debutant hooker Dylan Pythian scored within minutes of taking the field.

But Souths hit back with tries by Sam Burgess, who powered over from close range, and Johnston, who received a pinpoint crossfield kick from Reynolds to score untouched in the corner.

A spectacular chip-and-chase try from Knights fullback Jake Mamo in the 75th minute allowed retiring veteran Jeremy Smith to kick the second goal of his NRL career, in his final appearance on home turf.

Smith kicked one goal for Melbourne in 2008 and also landed eight goals at international level for New Zealand.

Souths remained 13th on the points table, while Newcastle are a distant last and will collect their second consecutive wooden spoon.
