Jones is reportedly working on "writing projects", but will continue to host Q&A; on Monday nights. Alberici is due to return to Lateline on May 1.

In the interim, reporter Jeremy Fernandez will slide into the big chair, hosting the show Monday to Thursday. On Friday nights, political correspondent David Lipson and senior reporter Matt Wordsworth will share presenting duties.

Fernandez is seemingly being groomed by the ABC for a bigger role. A regular news presenter on News 24, Fernandez, who joined the broadcaster in 2000, co-hosted the ABC's New Year's Eve telecast with Ella Hooper.

As well as the Lateline gig, he will continue to present the 7pm news bulletin on Friday and Saturday nights in New South Wales.

Lateline can be seen every weeknight on ABC News 24 at 9.30pm and on ABC TV at 10.30pm
