Big Brother on Broadway: Adaptation of George Orwell's dystopian novel '1984' to premiere in New York this summer
- A critically-acclaimed UK-adaptation of George Orwell's 1984 is set to premiere at the Hudson Theatre in New York City on June 22
- No casting for the production has been announced yet
- The play is based off the 1949 novel about a dystopian future in which a fascist regime takes control of England
- Sales for the novel have spiked in recent weeks as Trump's administration has drawn disturbing similarities to the Big Brother government in the book
A new British stage adaptation of George Orwell's chilling dystopic novel '1984' is coming to an America where issues of 'newspeak' and surveillance are quite relevant.
Producers Sonia Friedman and Scott Rudin said Thursday that the play will open on June 22 at the Hudson Theatre.
Nominated for an Olivier Award, it was created by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan and ran four times in the UK after premiering in 2014. No casting for the American production has been revealed yet.

The renewed interest comes on the heels of the Trump administration's unfounded allegation that millions of illegal votes were cast against him last fall and adviser Kellyanne Conway coining the phrase 'alternative facts.'
Interest also may have spiked thanks to the recent passing of actor John Hurt last week, the star of the original film adaptation.
The creative team for '1984' includes Chloe Lamford (Scenic & Costume Design), Natasha Chivers (Lighting Design), Tom Gibbons (Sound Design) and Tim Reid (Video Design).
The Hudson Theatre was recently refurbished and is back on the official list of Broadway theaters for the first time since 1968.
It's set to reopen later this month with a short run of Sunday in the Park with George, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
That production will run from February 11 through April 23. It's unclear when previews for 1984 will begin.
So far, it's set to be the first Broadway show of the 2017-2018 season.
