With lingerie clearly on show and large panels seemingly missing, these dresses look – at least on first glance – like embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions.

But these revealing ‘half-dress’ designs are, in fact, the latest trend, and beloved by Hollywood A-listers.

La La Land star Emma Stone led the way at last weekend’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, with her risqué Alexander McQueen dress featuring a lace bodice.

Whilst the black silk gown, which was embroidered with a floral pattern, might have looked unfinished, it had been carefully crafted to have a ‘slashed’ effect.

As the actress of the moment, who has won numerous awards for La La Land, Miss Stone’s bold choice appeared to give the green light for other celebrities to follow suit.

On Wednesday evening, Kate Bosworth opted for a ruffled floral dress which featured a black bust detail on one side.

The 34-year-old, who is starring in upcoming BBC drama SS-GB, turned heads at InStyle’s EE Rising Star party but did not appear fazed by her raunchy outfit, by Italian designer Giambattista Valli.

Whilst these dresses might have appeared unique, they are part of a growing trend for making demure dresses more provocative.

Fashion designer Kyri, who has dressed Paloma Faith and Leona Lewis, said: ‘Both looks are showing us a trend that is fresh and bold. The soft floral fabrics are leading us into the Spring season but on another level. More provocative yet keeping the looks cleverly tasteful.’

The Daily Mail’s assistant style editor, Amy Kester, said: ‘Emma certainly heated up the red carpet in her floor length Alexander McQueen dress that featured a sheer panel of black lace on the bodice. The way the dress falls away gives an unfinished touch, almost looking like a wardrobe malfunction.

‘Despite the unconventional design, the fine detail of the romantic floral embroidery brings a feminine touch to the gothic lace, which up close shows the delicate needlework.

‘Kate’s is more of a subtle reveal, however creates a different illusion that looks like she really has been exposed. The style makes it look like she’s wearing a one shoulder dress that’s fallen down revealing her bra and due to the stark difference in shade it makes it even more noticeable, a fashion faux par in my opinion.

‘With Alexandra McQueen and Giambattista Valli leading the way, I’m sure that other fashion houses are likely to follow, such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Balmain.’
