The City and Borough of Sitka (Tlingit: Sheetʼká), formerly New Arkhangelsk, or New Archangel under Russian rule (Russian: Ново-Архангельск or Новоaрхангельск, t Novoarkhangelsk), is a unified city-borough located on Baranof Island and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean (part of the Alaska Panhandle), in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,881. In terms of land area, it is the largest city-borough in the U.S., with a land area of 2,870.3 mi2 (7,434.1 km2) and a total area (including water area) of 4,811.4 mi2 (12,460.8 km2). Urban Sitka, the part that is usually thought of as the "city" of Sitka, is situated on the west side of Baranof Island.
The current name Sitka (derived from Sheet’ká, a contraction of the Tlingit Shee At'iká) means "People on the Outside of Baranof Island", whose Tlingit name is Sheet’-ká X'áat'l (here contracted to Shee).
Sitka's location was originally settled by the Tlingit people over 10,000 years ago. The Russians settled Old Sitka in 1799, calling it Redoubt Saint Michael (Russian: форт Архангела Михаила, t Fort Arkhangela Mikhaila). The governor of Russian America, Alexander Baranov, arrived under the auspices of the Russian-American Company, a colonial trading company chartered by tsar Paul I. In June 1802, Tlingit warriors destroyed the original settlement, killing many of the Russians, with only a few managing to escape. Baranov was forced to levy 10,000 rubles in ransom for the safe return of the surviving settlers.

Plot: Kenai, a man who resents bears after a fight with one kills his older brother, is turned into a bear so he can see life from a different perspective. He is visited by the spirit of his older brother, and is told that, if he wishes to be changed back into a human, he must travel to the place where the lights touch the Earth, in other words, the Northern Lights. Fueled by hope, Kenai sets off on his long journey, and, along the way, encounters a younger bear, Koda, who is a chatterbox and a fun-loving spirit; Koda is trying to find his way back to his home, the Salmon Run, which, coincidentally, is right next to where the lights touch the Earth. Koda and Kenai team up, but are hunted by Kenai's other brother, Denahi, who fears that the bear has killed Kenai as well. Along the way, the two bears meet other friends, including two moose, some rams, and some mammoths, with whom they hitch a ride. However, Kenai discovers that he likes being a bear, and realizes that humans aren't only afraid of bears; through Koda's eyes, the humans are the monsters, with their long spears. With a whole new view on life, Kenai makes a decision that will change his world forever.

This short video showing water and air pollution caused by Alaska Pulp Corporation's (APC) mill in Sitka, Alaska was compiled for viewing by a jury in the class action lawsuit Edwards v. APC. It shows graphically the severity of the mill's pollution. The scenes were shot on VHS tape by Florian Sever in 1991 to 1993. Sitka resident Larry Edwards filed the toxic tort against the mill in 1992, over its water and air pollution. The case became a class action for waterfront property owners. The mill closed permanently in 1993, and the case was settled out of court in 1994 just before it was to go to trial. Terms of the settlement were establishment of the Sitka Alaska Permanent Charitable Trust, which was endowed with $2 million. The trust's grants are equally divided between promoting scien...

In Alaska, seafood is big business. Alaska produces more seafood than the other 49 United States combined. In fact, Alaska ranks as the twelfth largest seafood producing nation in the world. From the industrial fisheries of the Bering Sea...to the mom and pop operations on the Southeast troll grounds, commercial fishing is the economic glue that binds Alaska. This marine wealth that characterizes Alaska exists today despite more than a century of intense exploitation by fishing fleets from around the world. Alaska's bounty is a tribute to the reproductive vitality of the state's marine environment, and to the effectiveness of modern scientific resource management. It is proof positive that abundant resources and large-scale commercial fisheries are entirely compatible, at least in a realm...
On November 4, 2009, the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard held a hearing on an interim report of the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force appointed earlier this summer by President Obama. While welcoming increased attention to the health of Americas oceans, U.S. Sen. Mark Begich expressed concerns about whether limited federal resources currently used to manage fisheries and other economic activities from the nations oceans could be at risk from changing national priorities. Begich placed skepticism towards the creation of a new ocean council led by the White House, citing NOAA's good record and stewardship. Begich expressed concern about a proposal for marine spatial planning, essentially zoning in the oceans. The senator sai...

I'm stupidly happy
Everything's fine
I'm stupidly happy
My heart pumping wine
I'm stupidly happy
With idiot grin
I'm stupidly happy
You won't catch me in
All the birds of the air call your name as they land on my kitchen roof
All the fish in the sea do the same if you need extra proof
I'm stupidly happy
My vision is skewed
I'm stupidly happy
I'm coming unscrewed
And if the Devil walks up dressed in any disguise
I take him by the collars look him in the eye
I'm stupidly happy
Now you're my defense
I'm stupidly happy
It's all making sense
I'm stupidly happy
I roll like a train
I'm stupidly happy
With you in my brain
All the lights of the cars in the town form the strings of a big guitar
I'm a giant to play you a tune for wherever you are
I'm stupidly happy
Are the words to that song
I'm stupidly happy
And nothing is wrong
And should the Devil walk up with his business card out
I'll tear it to confetti with a grin and shout,
"I'm stupidly happy"
All of the time
I'm stupidly happy
Now you're mine
