'I'd rather just see how she formulates it herself': Russell Brand on why he refuses to 'force a gender' on to his newborn daughter Mabel

He announced the birth of his first born daughter at the end of last year.

And appearing on Friday's edition of This Morning, Russell Brand explained how he came to the decision to name her Mabel - and why he won't be 'forcing gender' on to her as she gets older.

'Now that I have these very important women in my life [Mabel and fiancée Laura Gallacher] I have re-evaluated the way I look at gender,' he said.

'I don't have to dress her in feminine clothes, I don't need to dress her in clothes for her gender, I'd rather just see how she formulates it herself.

'I've become quite sensitive and aware of that since she was born.'

The 41-year-old elaborated on how he came to give Mabel her name.

'I stared at her for ages to make sure she looked like that name,' he said, disagreeing with Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford that 'kids grow into their names'.

'You have to name their essence. Her's was twinkling, sparkling, joyous,' he explained, adding that 'if she'd have had different sexual organs she wouldn't have been Mabel obviously.'

On fatherhood overall, the former party boy said: 'It's an abrupt and sudden change. It's like having a relative over to stay, but not a minor relative, like a distant uncle.

'There's not an area of her life I'm not involved in. Sadly I'm unable to produce breast milk.' 

The comedian said that he's wanted to be a parent since he was a child himself, and that he's incredibly grateful that he's now a father. 

Talking about his stage tour, he explained that he's called it Rebirth as a nod to both himself and to Mabel.

On what he's going to do with Mabel while he tours for over 70 dates, he quipped: 'I could gaffer tape the baby to my midriff and bring her with me!'

As Ruth and Eamonn thanked the actor and would-be politician for coming on the show, he said: 'Thank you for letting me be a part of your TV marriage and your actual marriage.'
