Bacolod (Filipino: Lungsod ng Bacólod), is a highly-urbanized Philippine city. It is the capital of the Negros Occidental province. Having a total of 531,943 inhabitants according to the LGPMS Census, it is the most populous city in the Western Visayas Region. It is currently ranked as the 17th most populous city in the Philippines. It is part of a metropolitan area called Metro Bacolod, which includes the cities of Silay and Talisay. It is notable for its famous MassKara Festival held during the 3rd week of October. Known for being a relatively friendly city, it bears the nickname "City of Smiles". Bacolod City recently ranked no. 1 in a survey by MoneySense Magazine as the "Best Place to Live in the Philippines". Bacolod ranks 3rd among the top ten "Next Wave Cities" of the Philippines for the best location for business process outsourcing and offshoring according to the 2010 report of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology.
Bacólod (English: Bacolod), is derived from bakólod (Old Spelling: bacólod), the Old Hiligaynon or Old Ilonggo (Old Spelling: Ylongo and Ilongo) word for a "hill, mound, rise, hillock, down, any small eminence or elevation", since the resettlement was founded on a stony, hilly area, now the barangay of Granada. It was officially called Ciudad de Bacólod (City of Bacolod) when Municipalidad de Bacólod (Municipality of Bacolod) was converted into a city in 1938.[citation needed]

The Bacolod Metropolitan Area, also known as Metro Bacolod, is the 7th most populous out of the 12 metropolitan areas in the Philippines. This metropolitan area as defined by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has an estimated population of 716,306 as of 2007. Roughly 1 in 124 Filipinos reside in this metropolitan area. The area is named after the City of Bacolod, the most important and largest city within this center. The metro comprises the cities of Bacolod, Silay, Talisay and Bago. As of 2005, Metro Bacolod and Metro Iloilo-Guimaras which are both located in the Western Visayas Region with relatively high GDP shares, contributed ₱88,056,250 or about 7.3% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). Metro Bacolod and Metro Iloilo-Guimaras are among those identified by the National Framework for Physical Planning: 2001–2030 as the country’s leading industrial, financial and technological centers which serve as the main ports for international trade. These combined areas in Western Visayas ranked 4th among the six regions in terms of GDP contributions in 2005.

Bacolod City "The City of Smiles" is the capital and largest city of the province of Negros Occidental. Having a total of 499,497 inhabitants as of August 1, 2007, it is the most populous city in the Western Visayas Region. It is notable for its MassKara Festival held during October. Known for being a relatively friendly city, it bears the nickname "City of Smiles" and the "Football City of the Philippines". Bacolod City recently ranked no. 1 in a survey by MoneySense Magazine as the "Best Place to Live in the Philippines"

Bacolod City is the capital of Negros Occidental. It’s in the Negros Island in the Visayas in the Philippines. Its population is five hundred to six hundred thousand.
The Masskara Festival happens on the weekend nearest to October 19, which is the Charter Day of Bacolod. Normally we open in October 1 and it ends on October 19. It usually starts with a fun run, walk, jog, hike, and then they [the Bacolodnons] all meet at The Plaza. That happens every October 1 to open the festivities.
JOJO VITO:
"Well, the Masskara Festival started in the eighties during the downside of the sugar industry. Also the ship, Negros Navigation sunk at the time, the Don Juan. And Negros was basically gloomy and sad.
There was a group of artists who gathered together to think about how they can lift up the spirit of the people in Negros. Because it was at a time that we were so gloomy, and we would like to somehow alleviate the spirit of every Bacolodnon at the time. And they thought of a festival.
They came up with a festival. Since they were artists, they thought of the masks, a smiling mask as putting on something that would somehow represent what happiness is all about. It’s the reason why our masks in Bacolod City are smiling—because they are representations of the spirit of every Bacolodnon and every Negrense. Whatever crisis that we are experiencing, we have the ability to rise up and allow ourselves to rise above the situation that we are in.
So the Masskara Festival came from two words. The “Mass”, which “many” or “multitude”, and the “Kara”, which is face, meaning “Multitude of Smiling Faces”.
ROCKY PUENTEVELLA:
Bacolod is well known for its food among others. We are so proud of our Chicken Inasal, which was born in Bacolod City and now is spreading all over the country. But to be honest, there is a really different taste, especially if you go to Manokan Country, or Chicken House, or Chicken Deli.
Another thing that we are proud of about Bacolod and Negros is our culture. We have a lot of museums and old houses that you can visit.
Bacolod City has now one international airport. We are getting ready with our international flights. Hopefully, soon we’ll have direct flights to many parts of Asia. But for now, flights come in from Manila, Cebu, Davao, and you could also ride a boat from Iloilo by an hour to get here. You could ride a boat from Manila come here. And when you get here, there are many vans you could rent to get to your destination. People here are so friendly, that’s why you can just ask around, and then maybe [inaudible] to ask for brochures. Basically to walk around by yourselves in these walking tours.
What I’m most proud of about Bacolod is the food and definitely its people. The people are what make this city special. We go an extra mile to make our visitors feel comfortable, feel safe, happy, and that they’re really going to have fun, and they’re going to keep on coming back.

While living in Bacolod City in norther Negros Occidental province, we decide to take a day trip to the most beautiful mountain resort that we know of, Mambukal Mountain Resort. This is a great place for a family vacation or camping trip destination. They rent out cottages and rooms for decent prices for large groups. They also have very good prices for there camping area. This resort has many activities such as Waterfall Hiking, Swimming pools, Hot Springs, Bat sanctuary, Butterfly sanctuary, parks, boat rentals, zipline, wall climbing, Spa, Massage, flower market and more. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to get from Bacolod City to Mambukal Resort by car or motorbike or scooter, you can also rent a car, van or bus to take large groups there. There are many little restraunts there to choose from, lots of sea food and bbq. This is one of the top places to visit if you are traveling through Bacolod city and a great place to chill and enjoy the mountain jungle nature at its best.
