Dockers winless after going down to GWS
Greater Western Sydney notch their first win in Perth after holding off a late Fremantle comeback.
As Greater Western Sydney's breakout season continues, they notched up a few more milestones with an 18-point win over Fremantle on Saturday night.
Just a week after beating Hawthorn by an impressive 75 points, the Giants surely ended the Dockers' season at Domain Stadium, if it wasn't already over.
It wasn't as easy a win as against the Hawks, as GWS managed to kick just one goal in the final quarter-and-a-half (off the boot of Tom Scully on the final siren), but as the Dockers threatened to run over them late in the game, they showed a maturity that would have opposition sides taking notice.
The win means the Giants have recorded victories over the reigning premier and the reigning minor premier in consecutive weeks.
The loss was the Dockers' seventh straight to start their season, with the Hawks waiting for them in Tasmania next weekend.
Remember, this was a side that went 9-0 at the start of the 2015 season and there were 13 of the Dockers 2013 losing grand final side out on the park.
Again, they were competitive, as they have been in several of their losses this season. They had the chance to get the margin back to within two straight kicks early in the final term, but again, their lack of accuracy in front of goal let them down.
Lachie Neale didn't let them down though and continues to lead Fremantle's midfield in the absence of Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe.
He led all possession-getters with 33, with 25 of them being contested.Â
Although giant ruckman Aaron Sandilands is among the list of important players not currently playing for the Dockers, the midfield wasn't overpowered.
John Griffin played arguably his best game in Dockers' colours, with 40 hitouts and 17 possessions, while Neale (13) and David Mundy (seven) kept their side in the contest with their clearance work.
Even though the Giants threatened to kick away several times, with consecutive goals in each quarter, the Dockers hung around.
They just didn't help themselves in front of goal. In the third term, when they did control most of the play, they kicked 2.6 from 21 inside 50 entries.
The Giants went forward only seven times for the term, but kicked 3.2 for their efforts, winning the quarter by two points and taking a 22-point lead into the last break.
Stephen Coniglio, Callum Ward and Heath Shaw were pivotal in ensuring that was enough.
Ward, playing in his 150th game, gave the Dockers the most trouble in the centre, with 10 clearances of his own and, when the game was in the balance, clearly wanted the ball in his hands.
The victory was also the Giants' first win in Perth in seven attempts since entering the competition.
Their only four previous contests against the Dockers were played in Perth and resulted in losses by an average of 76 points. Their past two against West Coast were both at the same venue, by a total of 198 points.
No matter where the season finishes for the Giants, history has already been made by this young group.
