The name of the famed Pokemon trainer Ash is sky rocketing in popularity among new parents.

Parents often want to give their baby a name with a modern feel, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that some new mums and dads are taking inspiration from Pokémon Go.

According to BabyCenter in the US, new parents have started embracing the unique character names from the popular augmented reality game.

BabyCenter monitor baby name trends by asking members what they named, or plan to name, their baby.

Amongst other, more traditional baby names, BabyCenter started to see a spike in Pokémon character names.

The name Roselia has gone up 5,859 spots, Onyx 2,184 spots and Eevee 1,377 spots compared to this time last year.

Similarly, for boys, Ivy has gone up 1,287 spots, Shay 64 spots and Ash (the main character in Pokemon) has gone up 248 spots.

BabyCenter also report that nearly 50 per cent of mums have registered to play Pokémon Go.

Global editor in chief of BabyCenter Linda Murray said parents are always looking to pop culture for baby name ideas.

"Parents are always looking to pop culture for baby name inspiration and, right now,it doesn't get hotter than Pokemon Go," Ms Murray, explained.

"It's possible that parents' enthusiasm for the game will reignite their love for the brand and spark a full-fledged naming trend."

It shouldn't be that surprising the popularity of Pokemon is impacting on baby names as parents often turn to pop culture for inspiration. Recent trends have been sparked by Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Twilight.

Of course, the new naming trend isn't the only way that parents are expressing their love for Pokémon Go.

Pokémon toys, nappy covers, baby costumes and even Pokémon inspired pregnancy art have been popping up all over the Internet.

With the Pokemon Go craze still going strong it is probably safe to assume that more Pokebabies will be welcomed into the world in the coming months. Is it only a matter of time before we meet a baby Pikachu?
