German brand reveals $350k pricetag for new race-derived supercar

Mercedes-AMG has locked-in local details for its new flagship sportscar, the hard core AMG GT-R.

Against the background of this weekend's Bathurst 12-Hour, where a fleet of four of the latest GT3 racers will attempt to win the once-around-the-clock event, the German brand has revealed final price and initial specifications for the road-going GT-R ahead of its official showroom arrival in July.

The race-derived version of the front-engined machine will command a $50,000 premium over the regular GT S that has been on-sale in Australia for almost two years, costing $349,000 (plus on-road costs).

But the GT-R justifies the extra spend with more power from its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, revised suspension, improved aerodynamics and the addition of four-wheel steering.

The engine itself has been re-tuned to develop 430kW of power (up from 375kW in the GT S) and can slingshot the GT-R from 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 318km/h.

The suspension is stiffer and the front and rear tracks have been widened with larger wheels and tyres which, along with the four-wheel steering, further improves the car's road holding.

A unique feature of the GT-R is its nine-stage traction control, which has been developed with direct input from the GT3 racing series. With this, the driver can select precisely how much slip the car generates from the rear-end before the electronics intervene to bring it back in to line.

It also uses active aerodynamics to create extra downforce at high speeds while reducing drag at lower speeds to improve fuel consumption.

Mercedes-Benz Australia will reveal more details, including full specifications and options available, for the GT-R closer to its mid-year launch.

In the meantime, the first example in Australia will be on display at the Bathurst 12-Hour this weekend and will take part in production car shootout against supercars such as the Ferrari LaFerrari.

Seriously, who cares and why is this even a story? If you can afford it, the actual price would be irrelevant/If you need to ask the price you can't afford it. Why are we any better of for knowing this, it is a machine that has an audience in Australia of maybe 20 or 30 or so.

Truth, at a price point around the same as the new 911GTS, I would suggest that there are more than 30 buyers around Australia. Conversely, those buyers who can afford this are likely to want to drive a hard bargain for that sort of coin.

@truth Seriously, who cares and why is this even a story? Well, it seems you (1) read the article, and (2) once again found the time in your (no doubt) busy social life to negatively comment. This car does have some good competition and buyers at this level, well, we can be a bit picky you know :) I found the article interesting. So, enjoy whatever it is you drive, but even better for you would be if you could enjoy reading about cars you never will drive perhaps? Oh, and @holden_man. It is indeed more that 3 x the price, but its also more than 3 x the car and 3 x as desirable (to most). Drive one and i'm guessing you'll be pleasantly surprised. (i.e. gob-smacked)
