Newspapers.com is a newspaper database in the family of companies associated with Ancestry.com. Their database includes more than 73 million pages from 3,000-plus newspapers, mostly local United States papers with some Canadian and elsewhere. (Lists: https://www.newspapers.com/papers/ and https://www.newspapers.com/browse/). It is particularly suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 34 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States. The collection includes some major newspapers for limited periods (i.e., 50 years of the New York Times), but mostly consists of regional papers from the 1700s onward. Very few titles go beyond the late 1980s. Free accounts through the Wikipedia Library do not include access to Newspapers.com Publisher Extra content.

As part of a pilot program with Wikipedia Library, they generously offered the use of 100 accounts to their database of American newspapers. Due to the success of the program and the large number of requests from users, they have since increased the number of accounts available to 400.

Further participation[edit]

You can help The Wikipedia Library share this partnership:

  • Add {{Wikipedia:Newspapers.com/Userbox}} to your user boxes. This helps us share our project with other experienced users.

Using the "Clipping" function[edit]

Both Newspapers.com and The Wikipedia Library would prefer that articles citing Newspapers.com link to clippings. Clippings allow Newspapers.com subscriber-editors to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper and share them through unique URLs. Thus readers who click on a Newspapers.com Clipping link will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. Clippings can be deleted by the user who created the clipping, but otherwise remain permanently open access, even when user accounts expire. For more information about how to use clippings, follow this link.

  1. Carbrera (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Hey. I've written and/or expanded a ton of articles regarding music and would find this tool useful in order to look at possible reviews which would be helpful for certain sections of album/song articles. I've been editing for nearly 2.5 years and was surprised I didn't find out about this until recently. Thanks, Carbrera (talk) 00:55, 19 January 2017 (UTC).

  2. BU Rob13 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Hi. I write biographies for Canadian Football League players, and this database includes access to Ottawa Journal articles much farther back than I'm able to go with LexisNexis and other databases. This will help me expand stubs on players who played from 1940–1978. ~ Rob13Talk 03:45, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

  3. Lizard the Wizard (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I frequently expand biographies of historically significant National Football League players and rely heavily on newspapers for citations, mainly from Google's newspaper archives. I've written 10 good articles (not counting two awaiting review; see the "What I've done" tab on my userpage) and plan on writing many more, so this would be a valuable resource in my endeavors. 4. EdChem (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been collaborating with Doug Coldwell, and we have expanded Elizabeth Plankinton (diff of combined edits added ~23 021 bytes, 1 061 words, and 42 references), Elizabeth Plankinton House (new article, combined edits added ~16 012 bytes, 1 126 words, and 16 references), John Plankinton (new article, combined edits added ~33 000 bytes, 1 896 words, and 62 references), and Richard Henry Park (diff of combined edits added ~16 895 bytes, 1 103 words, ~20+ references). Doug has newspapers.com access and has been finding things for me, but it'd be much easier if I could use it myself. We are working towards articles on John Plankinton House, a mansion refurbished in the 1860s, William Plankinton House, which John built for his son in the 1870s and was being discussed for preservation in the 1960s, William Plankinton (the name of John's son and his grandson, who inherited John's vast estate), and John Plankinton Statue, which is still on display and was recently restored. The access to historical materials from the Sydney Morning Herald (Australian newspaper) would also be useful for some of the materials relating to the Ensemble Theatre and its history and productions, which goes back into the 1950s. The article on Hayes Gordon needs expansion, and Sandra Bates AM and Mark Kilmurry (the Theatre's only two other artistic directors in its nearly-60 year history) are both notable and their biographies are missing. I have been a Wikipedian for a long time, have made over 12000 edits (all manual), 4630 in the last 12 months, and maintain an over-50%-of-edits-in-article-space-record. My DYK credits pages lists 49 article creations / expansions, successful nominations of 10 other articles, and other nominations in progress. I have written an FA (rhodocene) for which I have a Four Award (having taken it from a new article through DYK, GA, and FA), and developed the biography of Hans Freeman from a 604 byte unreferenced BLP stub of 66 words to a 25 843 byte GA of 1 391 words with 28 references. Hopefully this is enough to show my commitment to WP content development, my skill, and the benefit from my being able to access newspapers.com content. Feel free to ask if you need any information, or to ask Doug about recent collaborations involving newspapers.com content. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 04:09, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

  5. Crash Underride (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I frequently help edit and expand or even create articles for current and former players in the National Football League, and as such many articles require newspapers, especially older players. I've helped get Kojo Aidoo to GA status (as well as a current GA nomination for T. T. Toliver. Newspaper access would help with the expansion of players from the Arena Football League massively as they usually weren't covered as much in college as players in the NFL. I have a user box at the bottom of my user page that lists every article and template I've created, as well as images I've uploaded for Wiki use. I plan to continue contributing to Wikipedia for as long as I can and this would be of immense help. Thank you. (talk page stalker) CrashUnderride 14:16, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

  6. Rlendog (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I frequently edit articles of athletes and music subjects for which access would likely be useful to source information on a regular basis. I also work extensively on Tree of Life articles for which access to newspapers.com may be relevant occasionally. 15:09, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

  7. Stratosphere (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I've been a Wikipedia editor since 2006, mainly dealing with articles related to highways as part of the WP:USRD project, specifically Michigan and Nebraska. Frequently, historical information is available via newspapers in and around the area in which a route or highway development occurred, so access to newspapers.com will facilitate detailed histories which may otherwise be difficult to obtain. I've recently been working to improve historical information on some Nebraska highways and have stumbled across a couple situations where a subscription would have helped greatly. Thanks! 8. Xover (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Plan to use access for theatre reviews, actor and director interviews, and news and editorial coverage of theatre companies, productions, and festivals within the scope of WikiProject Shakespeare. Both reference gnoming on existing articles and for creating new articles in this area. --Xover (talk) 21:22, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
