Good Morning Canberra!

What's that you say? Friday couldn't have come at a better time? Hear! hear!

We are in for a bit of cloud but a mostly warm day reaching 33 degrees. It's going to be like this or hotter until Monday.

What's making news?

ACT Government spends $18,460 per student in government schools, the highest of any jurisdiction, and well above NSW's $14,800.

Kirsten Lawson explains whether all this spending is paying off.

'Cuts show leadership'

Slimming down the public service to the tune of 4000 jobs?

It's a move former employment minister and liberal back bencher Eric Abetz said would show government leadership.

But there are some voices in the chorus who feel the bid to curb spending could short-change the public.

Markus Mannheim and Doug Dingwall look at the likely impacts.

Conception on the run

Hearing about prisoners escaping from Canberra jail and avoiding recapture had the city talking.

And now, news of a baby.

Twenty one year old Jacob MacDonald escaped from prison and avoided recapture for eight days before he was arrested at his Narrabundah home - where his lawyers say he conceived a child with his girlfriend.

Highway to the danger zone

How much of your week are you working?

Liam Wilson has hit the limit, according to a new ANU study. The real estate agent works 60 hours a week, but says he feels fine and exercises more than most.

Clare Sibthorpe takes a look at the simmering debate about work life balance and whether a 38 hour or 48 hour work week should be the benchmark.
