"The man was wanted by police in relation to the death of a woman in St Albans this morning," a police spokesman said in a statement.

"Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter."

Earlier, neighbours told Fairfax Media they had woken to the sounds of screaming and crying after the woman was fatally stabbed in her unit.

The woman has not yet been identified.

One neighbour, Iris, who has lived on Main Road east for 35 years, said she heard a woman loudly screaming and crying at about 1am.

She said she did not know the people who lived in the block of units.

"After I hear 'are you OK, are you OK?' and then nothing else," she said.

"I feel very upset and nervous, it's no good something like that happening next door."

Homicide detectives set up a crime scene at the property, and forensic police spent the morning taking photos of blood splattered on the driveway of the unit block.

Officers taped off several properties and a pole nearby, before hauling away bags of evidence from the woman's house about 8am.
