Sierra Leone (i/sɪˈɛərə lɪˈoʊni, -lɪˈoʊn/), officially the Republic of Sierra Leone, is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Guinea on the north, Liberia in the south-east, and the Atlantic Ocean in the south-west. Sierra Leone has a tropical climate, with a diverse environment ranging from savannah to rainforests. Sierra Leone has a total area of 71,740 km2 (27,699 sq mi) and an estimated population of 6 million (2011 United Nations estimate).Freetown is the capital, largest city, and its economic and political centre. Bo is the second largest city. The other major cities in the country with a population above 100,000 are Kenema, Makeni and Koidu Town. Sierra Leone is divided into four geographical regions: the Northern Province, Eastern Province, Southern Province and the Western Area, which are further divided into fourteen districts.
About sixteen ethnic groups inhabit Sierra Leone, each with their own language and customs. The two largest and most influential are the Temne and the Mende people. The Temne are predominantly found in the north of the country, while the Mende are predominant in the south-east. Although English is the official language spoken at schools and government administration, the Krio language is the most widely spoken language in the country and unites all the different ethnic groups in the country, especially in their trade and social interaction with each other.

English/Nat Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced from their homes in Sierra Leone and now face starvation as a vicious civil war tears their country apart. The war in the West African nation has pitted a little-known rebel group, the Revolutionary United Front, against the military government based in the capital, Freetown. As the war rages in the countryside, villagers, mostly women and children, have been forced to flee to refugee camps in the provincial capitals. The military government has promised free and fair elections in February to return the country to democracy but with the current state of anarchy it is difficult to imagine that elections will be possible. The skull of a rebel soldier sends a stark message from the Sierra Leonian army to the gu...
Military personnel stationed in Sierra Leone have sent messages to wish their loved ones a Happy Christmas. The troops in the video, which includes RAF personnel, are currently deployed on Operation GRITROCK to help tackle the spread of the Ebola virus. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon thanked the Armed Forces for their “tireless dedication, determination and commitment”. He said: “This Christmas many of the UK’s military personnel will still be doing their duty overseas. They will be continuing to support Afghan forces in Kabul, targeting ISIL terrorists, helping stop the spread of Ebola in Sierra Leone, policing Baltic airspace, and continuing to safeguard our national security. “It is only because of their tireless dedication, determination and commitment that the UK’s Armed Forces c...

Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. The Iranian Embassy siege took place from 30 April to 5 May 1980, after a group of six armed men stormed the Iranian embassy in South Kensington, London. The gunmen took 26 people hostage—mostly embassy staff, but several visitors and a police officer, who had been guarding the embassy, were also held. The hostage-takers, members of an Iranian Arab group campaigning for Arab national sovereignty in the southern region of Khūzestān Province, demanded the release of Arab prisoners from jails in Khūzestān and their own safe passage out of the United Kingdom. The British government quickly resolved that safe passage would not be granted, and a siege ensued. Over the following days, police negotiators secured the release of five hostages in exchange for minor concessions, such as the broadcast...

English/Nat War in Zaire, Sierra Leone or Angola. Wherever armed conflicts appear on the African continent, you are almost sure to hear that mercenaries are involved in some way. The increasing link of soldiers of fortune, especially those working for private companies, to African battlefields prompted a private military think-tank to hold a workshop on the phenomenon in South Africa this week. Guest of honour at the Institute for Strategic Studies' seminar on "The Privatisation of Peacekeeping in Africa" was Eben Barlow. He's chairman of one of the best known of these private companies, Executive Outcomes. For Barlow the situation is simple. Sierra Leone government has announced a 30 per cent budget cut to tackle the current economic crisis. It's triggered by falls in commodity prices and the aftermath of an Ebola outbreak. President Ernest Bai Koroma says the austerity measures include a 50 per cent reduction on fuel allocations, travel budgets and vehicle maintenance for all government departments. Overseas travel will be restricted and there's an outright ban on buying office equipment. Spending in the 2016 budget was originally set at eight-hundred-and-31-million dollars. The International Monetary Fund forecasts that Sierra Leone's economy will recover by 4.3 per cent in 2016. But public finances are still reeling from a 21.5 per cent economic contraction in 2015. Diamonds and agriculture form the backbone of Sierra Leone...

LONDON: The President of Sierra Leone failed to attend the all-important Ebola summit in London after his plane broke down. Ernest Bai Koroma was due to attend the international conference, organized by the UK and Sierra Leone governments to discuss how the global community can provide an effective response to the crisis in West Africa. A Foreign Office spokesman said, "Unfortunately the President of Sierra Leone is unable to attend the Defeating Ebola conference. The chartered plane he was scheduled to fly on experienced significant technical difficulties prior to take off". "We are currently exploring alternative ways for the President to participate in the conference". Foreign secretary Philip Hammond co-hosted the Defeating Ebola Conference to drive forward the international re...
Sierra Leone Politics only values the interests of its party rather than the lives of the ordinary people. When Ebola started in the country must took it to be a political move until when its claims most lives then they realised it wasn't .My big question is WHY EVERYTHING IN COUNTRY NOW IS POLITICS? As this week again the country has recorded a new ebola case which has sparked controversy on who is responsible for the lapses while others also take it to be political. People started dying and when you say it, they say politics and while this is happening others are exaggerating the matter, but tell me WHERE IS THE LOVE? https://slpublicopinion.wordpress.com https://twitter.com/slpublicopinion
The past decade has been full of peace and stability as the people of Sierra Leone have striven to make a better country for themselves. International investors are starting to take note. Two large mining companies have set up operation and will be exporting iron ore before the end of 2011. Cocoa and coffee production are increasing and a juice factory has opened up in the new FIRST Step, Special Economic Zone. Sierra Leone's energy supply is increasing as a bioenergy plant is set to open in two years and Joule Africa is planning to build a 400 MW hydroelectric plant within 6 years. The country is proving that doing business in Sierra Leone is not only viable but profitable. Various investors and businessmen are realizing that Sierra Lone is Africa's new investment destination.
After years of double digit growth, Sierra Leone's growth trajectory is being cut by Ebola. Business activity has slowed down with trade slumping between the affected West African states of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Tourism activity is also at an all-time low after most international and African carriers suspended flights to those countries. Government officials say the forecast for Sierra Leone, is bleak

VOA's Ricci Shryock reports on the future of public health in Sierra Leone after Ebola.
In January, 2014, a group of 12 women from the United States travelled to Sierra Leone. Many having children themselves, quickly realized the alternate reality of motherhood when education and resources are limited. In Sierra Leone, World Vision is working with faith leaders and community health workers to help mothers by providing education about simple ways to save lives. Girls age 15-19 have twice the risk of dying from pregnancy related causes then women age 20-24. Spacing pregnancies by more than 3 years can reduce under-5 mortality by 25%. By educating about and providing means to time and space pregnancies in a healthy way, more mothers are surviving pregnancy and more children are living to celebrate their fifth birthday.
Sierra Leone's health system has suffered from decades of corruption and the destruction wrought by a long civil war. The few functioning hospitals are under-staffed and short on medical supplies and equipment. Now a new medical center provides high quality services all under one roof. Fid Thompson reports for VOA on Dr. Sylvester Nicol's vision for healthcare in Sierra Leone in this edition of Making a Difference.

(I was spendin' too much time alExplainone)
Spendin' too much time alone...
(And I just ran outta Trojans)
Horses gallop to her throne
(We were behaving like teenagers)
We're behaving like teenagers
(Makin' less than minimum wage)
Still inside our parents' homes
(No I don't live in Denver)
No I don't live in Denver
(I grew up in Sierra Leone)
And her pink skies will keep me warm
Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone
Tid bits of intuition that I be gettin' abandon admission (Sierra Leone)
Abandon mission, you must be kiddin', this shit feelin' different
Shit feelin' too good to me
Glistening, shimmerin' underneath the sunlight, the sunlight (Sierra Leone)
And a new day will bring about the dawn
And a new day will bring another cryin' babe into the world (girl now)
Our daughter's reachin' for the nipple cause it's time for her to eat
Tonight I'll lay her in the cradle if it's time for go to sleep
I sing a Lennon lullaby, she can have a pretty dream
Baby girl if you knew what I know, knew what I know
Na, na na, na na, na...
