She's playing the perfect wife in the upcoming HBO mini series, Big Little Lies.

But Reese Witherspoon says she wasn't content with just playing perfection, in a new interview which sees her appear on the cover of Variety opposite the series' director, Jean-Marc Vallée.

Reese, 40, asked screenwriter David E. Kelley if they could actually change the story arc of her role, Madeline Martha McKenzie, 'because I didn't have anything to play but perfection, and I just think those people who are perfect [are] all full of s–t.'

While the actress did not elaborate on what the changes were, she explained the desire came from a place of wanting a deeper backstory.

'It mainly came out of me not having anything to really put my teeth into,' she explained.

'I think there’s something fascinating about a person who projects perfection or is very judgmental of others who is clearly just swimming in their own discontent.'

Big Little Lies is a television adaptation of the bestselling book of the same name, and Reese, who also produces the show, reunited with director Jean-Marc Vallée for the series.

Under his directon, Reese was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for the 2014 film Wild.

'I feel safe with Jean-Marc — more safe than I've ever felt with anybody, because he's my brother, he’s my partner; I know he's always going to demand the best, but I'm always going to bring my best.'

'We hold each other to those standards. We don't have any artifice between us.'

The series stars Reese, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley as mothers living in Monterey, California.

But the stars initially viewed the meaty project as a feature film.

Nicole told Variety, 'For a minute we looked it as a film...But it needs the time to do justice to the five women. We wanted the storylines to be evocative.

'We wanted them to be properly dealt with, and to squeeze it into two hours would have been tough.'

With Jean-Marc directing and David writing the show, Reese also spoke about the gender ratio.

'Any woman who’s trying to lift other women up and create more work for women is literally just looking for parity,' she said.
