Penrith Panthers back into NRL top eight with win over South Sydney Rabbitohs

The great production line at the foot of the mountains shows no signs of slowing down as the Penrith Panthers' young guns guided the club back into the top eight with a nervous two-point win over the Rabbitohs.

Panthers inflict more pain on Rabbitohs

South Sydney lost to Penrith 28-26.

At the centre of the 28-26 win were the halves Bryce Cartwright and 18-year-old Nathan Cleary, who tore apart Souths, combining for one try and three assists. With the eagerness of rookies and composure of veterans, the duo couldn't be contained as their pace, creativity and aggression continued both their families' long legacy in the game. 

Whether it was Cleary's calm finishing off the boot or Cartwright's incisive attacks, the two masked otherwise jittery defending that allowed South Sydney a sniff at a shock comeback, scoring two tries in the final minutes to set up a tense finale.

It could have been more special had Adam Reynolds not been injured during Origin, leaving Luke Keary to find a one-man response to the rampant Panthers halves who warmed up a freezing night in Sydney's west. 

The crowd were already in a celebratory mood before kick-off when news broke of Origin winger Josh Mansour committing to the club for a further two years with his contract extension announced inside the stadium.

That atmosphere was short-lived, however, when Kyle Turner broke through to score the Rabbitohs' first try of the evening with a sense of ease that would have caused much frustration for Panthers coach Anthony Griffin. A set move may have unlocked Penrith's defence but Turner brushed off two markers with a simple, direct run to the line. 

The Panthers hit back immediately through Dallin Watene-Zelezniak. Just two days after playing Origin, Matt Moylan showed no signs of fatigue as he proved the architect for Penrith's first try, finding his winger with a superb cut-out pass in the corner. Cleary, son of former Penrith coach Ivan, showed glimpses of his father during his playing days, calmly converting from the sideline.

A penalty goal for Cody Walker put the Rabbitohs momentarily in the lead before Bryce Cartwright provided a gift for the newly re-signed Mansour. A smart run drew out two markers and as Cartwright lunged for the line, he unselfishly offloaded to Mansour to ensure the four-pointer would be awarded without requiring the bunker. 

Not to be outdone, Greg Inglis provided his own moment of magic to carve through the sluggish Penrith defence to regain Souths' lead five minutes after the restart. The Queensland star was still in a celebratory mood as he stepped off his left foot to instinctively slice his way through the Panthers' line to ground his third try of the season. 

Consecutive penalties in good range helped the hosts, however signs of unfamiliarity in the young halves pairing was exposed at times with neither Cleary or Cartwright steering their team around with any dominance

Despite being limited in his role at hooker, Peter Wallace eventually exerted himself and a bullet pass from dummy-half to Jeremy Latimore caught the Rabbitohs off guard. The powerful forward burst through beneath the upright to make it 16-14.

From the resulting play, the same young halves pairing finally put the Rabbitohs to the sword. A line break for Cartwright 40 metres from the line left Souths defence in tatters and an inside pass gave Cleary a chance to score his second career try and extend their lead to eight points. 

Their early celebrations were cut short by a quick-fire double to Sam Burgess, whose late tries stopped fans from leaving early and while creating a tense final minute at Pepper Stadium, failed to alter the outcome.
