Super gig! Teri Hatcher to join The CW's Supergirl in villain role... 20 years after playing Lois Lane on Lois & Clark

Faster than a speeding bullet, Teri Hatcher shot to fame as a sex symbol in the 1990s TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman.

Now the 52-year-old will return to familiar DC Universe territory in a forthcoming recurring role - this time as a villain - in The CW's Supergirl, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg confirmed Tuesday.

Praising the actress for her iconic turn as Lois Lane, Kreisberg said he was delighted to have her embrace a new character.

'No offense to any of the wonderful actresses who have also played the part,' Kreisberg said, 'but Teri Hatcher is my all time favorite Lois Lane. To have her come back to the SuperWorld in a completely different part is an unbelievable gift to me, Greg [Berlanti] (series co-creator), and the fans.'

Kreisberg did not elaborate on her storyline, but she is expected to appear in the second half of the network's second season.

The show debuted in 2015 with 20 episodes that aired on CBS. In 2016 the show moved to The CW, where the 11th episode of its sophomore season will air on Feb. 6.

Girl power: The CW Supergirl series sees Melissa Benoist playing the lead hero

Melissa Benoist stars as the titular heroine opposite Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra 'Alex' Danvers, and Jeremy Jordan as Winslow 'Winn' Schott.

Dean Cain, who played Superman opposite Teri during their series run from 1993 to 1997, has already appeared on Supergirl as the title character's adoptive father.

For Dean and Teri, the roles made them sex symbols at the height of their fame.

In fact, an alluring image of Teri wrapped only in Superman's cape was once the most downloaded image on the internet, yielding a reported 20,000 downloads monthly over a six-month period in 1995.

The series finale aired two years later.

While Dean struggled to reclaim his level of celebrity, Teri's career later re-surged on ABC's Desperate Housewives from 2004–12, for which she earned a Golden Globe award.

The former Bond girl recently had a recurring role on CBS' The Odd Couple, which concluded in its third season on Monday.
