BEAUMONT- The Texas State University System has released a statement in response to a Whistleblower Lawsuit naming the system, Lamar University and LU President Dr. James Simmons as defendants.
Houston attorney Larry Watts filed lawsuit on behalf of his client, Vicki Ward, claiming the defendants retaliated against her for reporting what she called questionable financial transactions she discovered while in her position as Associate Vice President for Finance.

Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall, Ph.D., released the following statement about the lawsuit:
While the Texas State University System does not comment on personnel matters, I want to respond specifically to one of the allegations in Ms. Wards cause of actionthe claim that I asked Jimmy Simmons to resign as president of Lamar University. This never happened. In fact, I asked Jimmy to stay on as president when he resigned and, in fact, he has agreed to stay until the new president can be here. The Board, at my recommendation, named Dr. Simmons the first president emeritus of Lamar and named the music building after him, because of the many contributions made to Lamar University by this outstanding president, whom I have nothing but respect for, both professionally and personally.
Watts told KFDM News State District Judge Donald Floyd issued a temporary restraining order Thursday that preserves Ward's employment at LU.
Floyd has set a hearing for May 20.
The lawsuit seeks reinstatment to Ward's job, back pay, damages for mental anguish and other damages.

State university system
A state university system in the United States is a group of public universities supported by an individual state, or a similar entity such as the District of Columbia. These systems constitute the majority of public-funded universities in the country. Each state supports at least one such system.
State university systems should not be confused with federally funded colleges and universities, at which attendance is limited to military personnel and government employees. Members of foreign militaries and governments also attend some schools. These schools include the United States military academies, Naval Postgraduate School, and military staff colleges.
A state university system normally means a single legal entity and administration, but may consist of several institutions, each with its own identity as a university. Some states—such as California and Texas—support more than one such system.
State universities get subsidies from their states. The amount of the subsidy varies from university to university and state to state, but the effect is to lower tuition costs below that of private universities for students from that state or district. As more and more Americans attend college, and private tuition rates increase well beyond the rate of inflation, admission to state universities is becoming more and more competitive.

Ferris State University
Ferris State University (FSU, Ferris) is an American public university with its main campus in Big Rapids, Michigan. Founded in 1884 as the Big Rapids Industrial School by Woodbridge Nathan Ferris, an educator from Tioga County, New York, who later served as governor of the State of Michigan and finally in the US Senate where he remained until his death in 1928. The school was noteworthy at its time for accepting female students beginning with its first graduating class. It is also the only public university in Michigan to be founded by an individual.
Today Ferris is the ninth-largest university in the state with 14,560 students studying on its main campus, at one of the 19 off-campus locations across the state, or online. Two- and four-year degrees are offered through eight academic colleges and graduate degrees from six. Ferris grants professional doctorate degrees via its optometry and pharmacy colleges and a multidisciplinary doctorate of education in community college leadership through the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, and Education and Human Services. The school is known for having a faculty–student ratio of 1:16, and classes that are taught by professional instructors, not graduate assistants.

Houston attorney Larry Watts filed lawsuit on behalf of his client, Vicki Ward, claiming the defendants retaliated against her for reporting what she called questionable financial transactions she discovered while in her position as Associate Vice President for Finance.

Texas State University System Chancellor Brian McCall, Ph.D., released the following statement about the lawsuit:
While the Texas State University System does not comment on personnel matters, I want to respond specifically to one of the allegations in Ms. Wards cause of actionthe claim that I asked Jimmy Simmons to resign as president of Lamar University. This never happened. In fact, I asked Jimmy to stay on as president when he resigned and, in fact, he has agreed to stay until the new president can be here. The Board, at my recommendation, named Dr. Simmons the first president emeritus of Lamar and named the music building after him, because of the many contributions made to Lamar University by this outstanding president, whom I have nothing but respect for, both professionally and personally.
Watts told KFDM News State District Judge Donald Floyd issued a temporary restraining order Thursday that preserves Ward's employment at LU.
Floyd has set a hearing for May 20.
The lawsuit seeks reinstatment to Ward's job, back pay, damages for mental anguish and other damages.
