2017 Australian Open: Who will present the trophy for the men's winner?

Nadal to face Federer after nailbiter

Rafael Nadal defeated Grigor Dimitrov in an incredibly tense five setter that went for just under five hours.

"Roger's got every chance ... if I'm presenting the trophy, and I don't know who is, but I'd love to be able to present Roger the trophy," Rod Laver told Fairfax Media.

There is no set formula for when the trophy presenter is announced.

Some years, they're made public before the tournament even begins and in other years, it's a surprise.

If Federer was to win and Laver was to present him with the trophy, it would add a further layer of romanticism to the event.

It would be nearly 11 years to the day since it famously first happened, when Federer cried in his speech after being handed the trophy by Laver.

"Last but not least I'd like to thank Rod Laver ... for the trophy," Federer sobbed, after beating Marcos Baghdatis in four sets.

He finished the speech there and embraced Laver for a second time.

In fact, the 2006 Australian Open was  the first time  Federer and Laver had met, when Federer was being coached by Australian Tony Roche.

More than a decade on, Laver says Federer is playing even better tennis.  "When he played Berdych, I don't think he's ever played any better than that," he said.  "It's just incredible.

"He adheres to all the things that you respect about him. He signs every autograph, the crowds love him, the way he plays, everything he does is almost for a reason."
