Boeyen said a Telstra outage was behind the outage which affected computer check-in systems at a number of airports.

Manual systems including the use of handwritten tickets were used by Jetstar airport staff to check in travellers.

The fault was fixed and all systems were back online shortly after 5pm.

The fault also affected the airline's Australian customers.

Auckland Airport's domestic terminal, Jetstar's busiest airport in New Zealand, was not affected by the outage, Boeyen said.

It was unclear whether the fault also affected mobile and online check-ins.

Christchurch passengers, many heading to a Guns N' Roses concert in Wellington on Thursday night, said they were unable to board their plane on Thursday afternoon due to the fault.

"[The] plane was meant to leave at 4.50pm … Yes, we've boarded, but at 6.05pm," passenger Monique Zwaan said.

"The plane is full. We've sat on board for ages, but not left yet."

At 6.10pm Zwaan said the plane was about to take off – over an hour and a quarter later than scheduled.

The fault also affected the airline's Australian customers.
