A large truck has erupted into flames in Melbourne's outer north.

Flames of up to three metres high engulfed the truck and a section of road, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky in Wollert near Craigeburn.

Craigeburn Road was closed between the Hume Freeway and Epping Road due to the blaze, but has now reopened.

The CFA was called at 2.45pm and the fire was under control within five minutes after they arrived.

The two fire crews cleaned up and returned to the station within an hour.

The truck was towed away and police are investigating the cause.

It is understood the driver was unharmed.
