In mathematics, the slope or gradient of a line is a number that describes both the direction and the steepness of the line. Slope is often denoted by the letter m.

Plot: In the late 1800s, somewhere in the West, two cowboys, the laconic Tar and the prolix Slope, sit by a daytime campfire eating beans. Their cattle are somewhere nearby. Slope begins to wonder about things, including a line about "the child inside all of us," something a Chinese told them just before Tar shot him. Slope talks about skipping, something he hasn't done since he was a kid. He keeps talking, even through it's making Tar uncomfortable. Then Slope slips off his boots, stands up, and, indeed, starts to skip. What will Tar do? And what if they and their inner children aren't alone?

This short video shows the adventure of Slope Dude, which uses the ski run of Slope Dude to demonstrate positive slope, negative slope, a slope of zero, and a slope that is undefined. This is an improvement over a prior video, this one having complete captioning of the narration.
Join us on this introductory lesson to slopes of lines on the coordinate plane. This lesson dives into the meaning of slope relative to a lines steepness and direction. In the lesson, we explore the questions: How do I graph a linear function? How do I find the slope of a line? How do I use the slope formula? What is the difference between a positive slope and a negative slope? How do I simplify slope? All of our lessons are perfect for flipped classroom math teachers and students. This lesson is aligned with the common core math learning standards for Algebra I.

Look at that Cartesian Plane Isn't it just so beautiful? X on the horizontal Y up and down the vertical Now there's this thing called slope There are two ways that it's expressed It's the rise over run It's the change in y over the change in x Slope measures the steepness of a line A higher slope means a steep incline And the reverse is also true A low slope makes the line flatter too See there's this thing called slope There are two ways that it's expressed It's the rise over run It's the change in y over the change in x Let's see slope y-intercept form y = mx + b, oh my! The relationship between x and y Depends on the constants m and b m you see is the value of the slope So a higher m means a steeper line b is the y-intercept Where the line crosses the axis of y Now there's this th...
you run to the gate
but you'll be marked late
it's for your own good
it's for your own good
you're likely to make the grandest mistakes
you suffer alone
in the skin and the bone
let's sharpen those
new sets of arrows
for the next generation
of playground martyrs
and join in the game
of intolerable shame
'cos everyone shares
in the sins of their father's
school bell rings
single file in
trade you my unhappily everafters
so bring out those things
to hammer out the wings
of the next generation
