While we take a look back at the baby names trends of the year gone by, it's time to start thinking about what the next crop of popular names will be.

Nameberry has crunched the numbers, predicting which monikers will see a rise in 2017. The team took a look at which names were most searched for in January 2017 compared to that time last year – and as Nameberry writer Pamela Redmond Satran noted, "The results are astonishing: A whole raft of hot new names signal a major cultural shift in 2017."

The biggest trends? A slew of international names – including Tatjana from Russia and Lucien from France – and fewer gender-neutral choices.

There are a few that have no doubt had a boost due to pop culture: the fastest-rising girl's name, Tatjana, is close to Tatiana Maslany, the star of Orphan Black, while Sherlock has seen a rise in part due to the popular TV series of the same name.

Meanwhile, celebrities still have an influence: Ines, the name of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's daughter, rose 338 per cent, and Bowie, in honour of the late David Bowie, sits at number 16 for the boys.

Here are the top 20 boy and girl names, and how much each rose in the search ranks over the past 12 months.
