What The LaCroix & Other Reads

Between work commitments and finding time to finish Brad Stone’s fantastic new book, The Upstarts, which is a careful and nuanced look into the world of Uber and Airbnb. From the look of it, today will be one of those days when I can’t really find time to sit down and write! So instead, I thought I’d share some of the things that are worth reading.

DropBox – From zero to a billion in a decade

I first met Drew Houston and his co-founder, Arash Ferdowsi, over nine years ago. They had been quietly working on Dropbox and were going to announce it as part of their presentation for the YCombinator demo day. When I met with them, the Young MIT dropouts pointed out they wanted to change mainstream behavior of carrying around USB sticks and make personal file sharing dead simple. They were confident that the relative ease of use of their offering would win over the masses. Good Luck, I said. Well, they nailed it.

Words, Not Voices

It was an unsettling weekend! I have been grappling with the recent turn of events and its impact on the world we live in. It certainly raised my anxiety level to a point where I continuously woke up in the middle of the night, sat up and paced, and then fell back asleep.

(The Leica) M10

Leica, the iconic camera maker, recently released the new Leica M10 — the first new M series camera to be released in four years. And predictably it created a lot of excitement, especially among the Leica fans. Some of my friends who have Fuji X cameras were intrigued by the prospect of this new camera. It doesn’t look very different than other Leicas — except it has a dedicated ISO dial, which actually looks great and is perfectly positioned.

When will Netflix hit 100 million subscribers?

Netflix posted $2.48 billion in revenues and 15 cents a share in earnings, beating analyst estimates. Big bump came from overseas growth, thanks to original content they have been pumping out in the International markets. With 93 million subscribers, I believe by end of the first quarter of 2017 or first month of Q2 2017, Netflix will pass 100 million subscribers, thanks in part to growth in international markets. Expect the international subs to zoom past domestic subs in Q2 2017 as well. Not bad for a 10-year-old business. That is one of the many reasons why I have argued in the past that Apple should buy Netflix, even if it costs an arm-and-a-leg. [Netflix IR]
