In this excerpt from the film 'Targets' (1968, direction by Peter Bogdanovich), the main character, actor Byron Orlok (played by Boris Karloff), narrates a compelling short story, about death and avoiding our fate.
I've transcribed the full story here:
Once upon a time, many, many years ago, a rich merchant in Bagdad sent his servant to the marketplace to buy provisions. And after a while the servant came back, white-faced and trembling and said, 'Master, when I was in the marketplace, I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and I turned to look and I saw it was Death that had jostled me. When she looked at me she made a threatening gesture... Oh, master, please lend me your horse and I will ride away from this city and escape my fate. I will ride to Samara; death will not find me there.'
So, the merchant loaned him the horse and the servant mounted it, dug his spurs into its flanks, and as fast as the horse could gallop he rode towards Samara.
Then the merchant went to the marketplace and he saw Death, standing in the crowd. And he said, 'Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?' And Death said, 'I made no threatening gesture; that was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him here in Bagdad, for I have an appointment with him tonight... in Samara.'

Peter Bogdanovich's harrowing directorial debut was made independently and sold to Paramount, becoming an effective calling card for his career in the majors. In the wake of the rash of 1968 political assassinations the studio got cold feet and slapped on a misjudged gun control card at the beginning. Bogdanovich plays a film director named Sammy Michaels in tribute to Samuel Fuller, whose middle name was Michael and who refused screen credit for his contributions to the screenplay. This reissue trailer leans heavily on the director's "The Last Picture Show" fame.

Targets
Targets is a 1968 American thriller, written and directed by Peter Bogdanovich and filmed in color by László Kovács.
Plot
The story concerns a quiet, clean-cut young insurance agent and Vietnam War veteran named Bobby Thompson (Tim O'Kelly) who murders his young wife, his mother and a grocery delivery boy at home, then goes on an afternoon shooting rampage from atop a San Fernando Valley oil storage tank. Several motorists and passengers are wounded or killed on the nearby freeway. When the police respond and start to close in on him, he flees and takes refuge in a Reseda drive-in theater where aging horror film icon Byron Orlok (Boris Karloff) is about to make a final in-person promotional appearance before retiring from show business. Thompson, perched on the framing inside the screen tower, resumes his killing spree after sunset, randomly shooting theater patrons as they sit in their cars watching the film. In a climactic confrontation, the elderly Orlok slaps the murderer into submission. As the police take him away Thompson remarks with apparent satisfaction that he "hardly ever missed".

In this excerpt from the film 'Targets' (1968, direction by Peter Bogdanovich), the main character, actor Byron Orlok (played by Boris Karloff), narrates a compelling short story, about death and avoiding our fate.
I've transcribed the full story here:
Once upon a time, many, many years ago, a rich merchant in Bagdad sent his servant to the marketplace to buy provisions. And after a while the servant came back, white-faced and trembling and said, 'Master, when I was in the marketplace, I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and I turned to look and I saw it was Death that had jostled me. When she looked at me she made a threatening gesture... Oh, master, please lend me your horse and I will ride away from this city and escape my fate. I will ride to Samara; death will not find me there.'
So, the merchant loaned him the horse and the servant mounted it, dug his spurs into its flanks, and as fast as the horse could gallop he rode towards Samara.
Then the merchant went to the marketplace and he saw Death, standing in the crowd. And he said, 'Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?' And Death said, 'I made no threatening gesture; that was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him here in Bagdad, for I have an appointment with him tonight... in Samara.'

Bogdanovich plays a film director named Sammy Michaels in tribute to Samuel Fuller, whose middle name was Michael and who refused screen credit for his contributions to the screenplay. This reissue trailer leans heavily on the director's "The Last Picture Show" fame.

Most of the stand is made from scrap lumber. Even the 4" x 8" was a junk piece of timber I got from my heavy timber supplier. He said he had some he could not sell and gave it to me for $20 :)
