Ah the mountains.
I am currently the assistant editor at High Country News. I was formerly the rural and Denver schools reporter at Chalkbeat Colorado, a nonprofit news start-up covering the state’s public education system. Data in all its forms delights me as does aggressive journalism in the public interest. I have written about K-12 education and science issues for a number of news resources, including High Country News, which covers the economic, social and environmental issues that make the West the West, Willamette Week, a stubborn alternative weekly in Portland, OR, Virginia Sea Grant, which links resource users, managers and researchers in the Virginia coastal area and Reed Magazine, a surprisingly delightful alumni magazine.
I am also an avid backcountry skier and backpacker, as well as the holder of a B.A. in Biology from Reed College. I use it more often than you’d think.
