Archie Thompson goes back to his roots with Murray United

You can't keep a good man down, especially when he's returning to his roots to continue his career in the region where it all started.

Archie Thompson, the former Socceroo star and Melbourne Victory striker, is continuing his career for one more season by striking a deal to play for  NPL Victoria regional club Murray United in what the club, not surprisingly, is calling a huge coup.

Real Madrid extend La Liga lead

Real Madrid have extended their Liga lead with a 3-nil win over Real Sociedad.

Murray United, based in the border region of Victoria, plays in the second division of the elite state league and the Border Mail, reporting Thompson's latest move, argued that it was a coming of age moment for the game at that level.

The 54-cap Socceroo and world record holder for number of goals scored in an international fixture will play a minimum of three home games for the club.

"I feel like I'm coming home – I'm 1km from where I played junior football at Kelly Park and 1km from mum and dad," he told the Mail.

"Hopefully I can contribute on the field and put a few goals away, but I also have a role to play as a mentor and leader for some of the younger guys.

"If I can help some of these boys realise their dream then I'm doing my job – I'm giving back and that is exactly what I want to do."
