Aldi announces massive expansion plans across Perth

Aldi looks set to continue its assault on WA's supermarket duopoly of Coles and Woolworths, with plans to nearly double its presence in Perth by the end of 2017.

The German grocery giant has built 19 stores across the metropolitan area since the opening of its first store in Kwinana six months ago.

Perth's best Aldi tour

WAtoday's Brendan Foster takes a tour of the new Aldi store opening in Kwinana.

And on Tuesday in a statement it announced another 14 stores would be built in 2017 – bringing Aldi's portfolio up to 33 stores.

"By the end of 2016, Aldi had served approximately 3.2 million Western Australian shoppers, a testament to Aldi's growing popularity in the local community," the statement read.

"Aldi's next store will open in Morley in Q1, 2017 and will be followed by stores in Cockburn, Lakelands, South Fremantle, Spearwood, Banksia Grove and Secret Harbour later this year."

Over time, the retail giant hopes to have 70 stores developed across the state.

Aldi has hit a bump in the road, however, with two out of four of its applications to sell its exclusive liquor range at selected stores being rejected by the Director of Liquor Licensing.

The Wattle Grove and Butler stores were granted conditional approval to sell alcohol but Joondalup and Harrisdale were refused.

Other stores to open in 2016 included Belmont Forum, Kwinana, Lakeside, the Square Mirrabooka, Halls Head, Australind, Rockingham, Camillo, Southern River, Mandurah, Mundaring, South Lake, Armadale, Cannington, Waikiki and Ellenbrook.
