Australia Day scorcher for Perth with mercury set to hit forty degrees

Perth is in for a scorching Australia Day with temperatures reaching 30.5 degrees by 8am after a sweltering night where the mercury dipped to a balmy 21.6 degrees.

Australian poet Dorothea Mackellar's ode to Australia My Country famously states "I love a sunburned country, a land of sweeping plains, of ragged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains."

The Boss' BBQ plans

Bruce Springsteen is looking for a place to hang in Perth for Australia Day.

But there'll be no such respite for Perth with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a very hot and sunny day for Thursday's public holiday with 40 degrees expected, and eastern parts of the city like Midland potentially copping even higher temperatures.

The bureau said there will be north to northeasterly winds up to 30 kilometres an hour in the morning, with the Fremantle Doctor's southerly sea breeze paying a welcome visit in the middle of the day.

Fire danger for Australia Day is listed as severe and sun protection is recommended from 8:20 am to 4:50 pm, with the UV Index predicted to reach an Extreme level of 15.

But a hot day for Australia Day will surely pair very well all the barbeques, backyard parties and city-wide festivities in Perth and Fremantle, with cooler temperatures when the 'Skyworks' fireworks display over the Swan River and the Freo Fiesta display in the harbour city kick off.

And if you're lucky enough (or clever enough with your roster) to have Friday off, the end of the week and weekend promises more hot summer weather to see you through.

Perth 7-day forecast:

Thursday: 22 - 40, very hot and sunny

Friday: 18 - 34, humid and mostly sunny

Saturday: 19 - 37, mostly sunny

Sunday: 19 - 31, partly cloudy

Monday: 17 - 29, partly cloudy

Tuesday: 17 - 30, partly cloudy

Wednesday: 18 - 30, mostly sunny
