Firefighters are on the scene of an out of control one hectare grass fire burning in Latham district park.
There are 11 units and two helicopters on scene. The fire is creating significant smoke in the area.
Emergency Service Crews have warned the fire is burning in an easterly direction toward Dalley Crescent, Inglis Place, Mcfarlan Place and Moorehead Place.
"Fires burning in VERY HIGH conditions can be difficult to control – flames may burn into the tree tops," the agency spokesman said.
"There is a chance people may die or be injured. Some homes and businesses may be damaged or destroyed."
The spokesman warned embers could be blown and spot fires may occur 2km ahead of the fire.
"Your home will only offer safety if it and you are well prepared and you can actively defend it during a fire," they said.
"Leaving is the safest option for your survival. You should relocate to the location identified in your Bushfire Survival Plan."
Crews were called to the fire burning at Umbagong Park between Neville Place and Herron Crescent in Latham at 5.45pm on Monday night.
The fire is burning at a moderate rate and is heading towards the streets mentioned above.
The parkland is close by resdiences south of Charnwood and between Latham and Magregor.
An Emergency Services Agency spokesman said the fire warning was set to "watch and act".
A total fire ban is in place today across Canberra.
