Macquarie Radio Network’s 2GB and 3AW take number one again in Sydney and Melbourne

MRN offers largest exclusive 40+ audience and double the time spent listening of any network. Macquarie is Australia’s home of football finals.

Macquarie Radio Network’s (MRN) powerhouse News Talk stations 2GB in Sydney and 3AW in Melbourne continue to dominate the radio landscape, taking the Number One crown again in both markets, according to today’s Gfk Survey 6 results.

MRN’s network of News, Talk, Sport and Music stations have a national reach of more than 2.26 million Australians All People 10+ and the largest listening share of the influential All People 40+ age group. The time that MRN’s audience spends listening to its stations is close to double that of the nearest commercial competitor.

This survey, Macquarie brought its listeners all the excitement of the finals as Australia’s home of football across NRL, AFL and rugby union. The top rating Continuous Call Team of Ray Hadley, Bob Fulton, Darryl “Big Marn” Brohman, David Morrow, Mark Levy, Brett Finch and Mark “Piggy” Riddell covered the NRL finals fever for 2GB Sydney and 4BC Brisbane listeners. 3AW in Melbourne and 6PR in Perth have the nation’s best AFL commentary teams including Tim Lane, Tony Leonard, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson, Karl Langdon, Brad Hardie and Peter Bell.

In Sydney, 2GB continues its remarkable 11-­‐year reign as Sydney’s most listened to station, with an audience share of 12.8% and Number One in all weekday sessions plus Number One on weekends. 3AW continues to lead as Melbourne’s most listened to station for 9 years, with a 14.3% share in the latest survey.

Both Number One stations enjoyed strong performances in the competitive Breakfast and Morning slots. The Alan Jones Breakfast Show on 2GB commands a 15.1% share, with Jones notching up his 190th survey win. In Melbourne, 3AW’s Breakfast team of Ross & John dominate with a 19.2% share, and celebrate their 110th consecutive survey win.

On 2GB Mornings, Ray Hadley is still Number One in Sydney, with an audience share of 16.1%. Afternoons with Chris Smith and Drive with Ben Fordham also both claimed Number One positions in this survey. 3AW’s Neil Mitchell remains Number One with a share of 15.4%, up 2%. Denis Walter reclaimed the Number One spot in Afternoons with a 12% audience share. Tom Elliott remains strong in the highly competitive Drive slot with an 11.4% share.

Brisbane News Talk station 4BC’s continues to grow its audience in Brisbane. The audience share of Breakfast with Alan Jones rose to 6.3%, while Mornings with Ray Hadley stays strong with an 8.0% share. Drive announcer Ben Davis delivered another steady increase of 0.6%, followed by continued growth with a 0.7% increase in Money News with Ross Greenwood.

In Perth, News Talk station 6PR’s Breakfast team of Steve Mills and Basil Zempilas saw their audience grow 0.2% to deliver a 10.8% share, while Weekend Breakfast with Rod Tiley and Sue McDougal rose to 12.3%. As the AFL reaches the all-­‐important Grand Final with one Perth team competing, 6PR was Number One in Friday night and both Sunday afternoon AFL sessions, while 6PR’s cumulative audience jumped 18,000 to record an impressive result of 190,000.

With some new presenters at both 2CH in Sydney and Magic 1278 in Melbourne, alongside Magic 882 in Brisbane, MRN’s music stations continued to deliver a significant share of All People 40+.
