Police have re-opened Bourke Street Mall after investigating a suspicious package found among flowers honouring victims of the recent attack.
A police spokesman said the area had been cleared and "deemed safe", and the bomb squad had now left the mall.
Police earlier confirmed they were "conducting safety checks" at the makeshift memorial - which was in the process of being cleared by volunteers.

Police tape that had been used to cordon off the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Bourke Street Mall was taken down just before 1.30pm, with pedestrians allowed back into the mall.
Route 86/96 trams have resumed along their normal lines following an earlier disruption. Delays may occur as we restore timetables.

Priya Devi said she was shopping inside H&M; when she was told to evacuate the area.
"I just wanted to know what it was, because the area was completely empty," she said. "Considering what happened here two weeks ago, it was really concerning."
Volunteers have resumed removing the flowers and other tributes outside the GPO building.
Route 96 and 86 trams were being diverted via La Trobe Street, but are now operating as usual. However Yarra Trams said there may be some delays while the service caught up.
