2013 Le Minz 24-Hour Scooterthon: Charity Event Is On Again

Forget ‘Schoolies’; the 2013 Le Minz 24-Hour Scooterthon is the main event on the calendar for Queensland’s Gold Coast during December.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, essentially some famous motorcycle personalities combine with lesser-known riders to compete in a gruelling 24-hour endurance event for charity… on standard 50cc scooters.

Three-time World Speedway Champion, Jason Crump, will team up with three-time World Superbike Champion, Troy Bayliss, with the pair hoping their team can better their efforts from last year, when the 50cc ‘scoot’ gave up after 21 hours.

Other well-known riders including Darcy Ward and Garry McCoy have previously participated in the event which has now been running for over 10 years.

For the 2013 event, 45 teams have entered with proceeds supporting several charities, including the Racesafe Medical Team, which will field two entries of its own.

Most teams are made up of four riders, but a Wollongong man did the 24 hours solo last year, setting a Guinness world record for the longest continuous distance covered on a 50cc scooter, just shy of 1190km.

Owing to the construction of the Commonwealth Games village at the Gold Coast Showground, the 2013 event has been moved to the Xtreme Karting Complex, Pimpama, in Gold Coast’s north.

The 2013 Le Minz 24-Hour Scooterthon gets underway at 11:00am on Friday, December 13, with entry for spectators via a gold-coin donation.
