Let's talk about OCs

Original characters seem to have a pretty bad reputation online, but they’re not as bad as some people think. There’s a reason so many people make them. Granted the repetitive nature of seeing the same character clones and recolored OCs can get annoying, but everyone has to start somewhere. I prefer to see the unreasonably common Mary Sue as the beautiful blossoming of a character designer in the making. It’s the kind of thing that kids will look back on with a combination of nostalgia and regret that will make them realize how far they’ve come in their artistic journey. When I was in middle/high school and first learning how to draw, I loved making OCs. I loved taking inspiration from well developed, well written, imaginary worlds and trying to add to them (granted what I was “adding” was very amateur character design). And I may look back at some of my old work and feel the slight urge to curl up into a ball and evaporate, but it’s all part of the process. Creativity is a learning process. I was planning to make this video a lot longer because there are a lot of things I want to say about the topic, but I was running out of time because I'm moving. I may make a part 2. Let's talk about OCs

Original characters seem to have a pretty bad reputation online, but they’re not as bad as some people think. There’s a reason so many people make them. Granted the repetitive nature of seeing the same character clones and recolored OCs can get annoying, but everyone has to start somewhere. I prefer to see the unreasonably common Mary Sue as the beautiful blossoming of a character designer in the making. It’s the kind of thing that kids will look back on with a combination of nostalgia and regret that will make them realize how far they’ve come in their artistic journey. When I was in middle/high school and first learning how to draw, I loved making OCs. Original characters seem to have a pretty bad reputation online, but they’re not as bad as some people think. There’s a reason so many people make them. Granted the repetitive nature of seeing the same character clones and recolored OCs can get annoying, but everyone has to start somewhere. I prefer to see the unreasonably common Mary Sue as the beautiful blossoming of a character designer in the making. And I may look back at some of my old work and feel the slight urge to curl up into a ball and evaporate, but it’s all part of the process. Creativity is a learning process. I was planning to make this video a lot longer because there are a lot of things I want to say about the topic, but I was running out of time because I'm moving. I may make a part 2. Original characters seem to have a pretty bad reputation online, but they’re not as bad as some people think. There’s a reason so many people make them. Granted the repetitive nature of seeing the same character clones and recolored OCs can get annoying, but everyone has to start somewhere. I prefer to see the unreasonably common Mary Sue as the beautiful blossoming of a character designer in the making. It’s the kind of thing that kids will look back on with a combination of nostalgia and regret that will make them realize how far they’ve come in their artistic journey. When I was in middle/high school and first learning how to draw, I loved making OCs. I loved taking inspiration from well developed, well written, imaginary worlds and trying to add to them (granted what I was “adding” was very amateur character design). And I may look back at some of my old work and feel the slight urge to curl up into a ball and evaporate, but it’s all part of the process. Creativity is a learning process. I was planning to make this video a lot longer because there are a lot of things I want to say about the topic, but I was running out of time because I'm moving. I may make a part 2.
