Shopping List for How to Work with Concrete:
- Portland cement, gravel, and sand, to make concrete
- 2x boards, for building form
- 3-inch deck screws, to fasten together form boards
- Lime, added to cement and sand to make mortar
- ¾-inch stone, to form solid base for concrete slab
- ½-inch (No. 4) rebar or welded wire mesh, for strengthening the concrete

- Wheelbarrow and pointed shovel, for mixing concrete
- 1- or 2-gallon bucket, to measure dry ingredients
- 5-gallon bucket, for adding water to concrete
- Plate compactor or hand tamper, to compact ¾-inch stone base
- Cordless drill, for screwing together wooden form
- Steel float, to smooth concrete
- Push broom, for adding texture to concrete surface
- Edger, to round over edge of concrete slab
- Groover, for cutting control joints into the concrete
Steps for How to Work with Concrete:
1. Portland cement is the key ingredient in most masonry mixes, including cement, concrete, and mortar.
2. Concrete is composed of portland cement, sand, and aggregate (gravel). When the concrete cures, the aggregate binds the ingredients and makes concrete strong.
3. Mortar, used to build brick and concrete-block walls, is made of portland cement, lime, and sand; it contains no gravel.
4. Lime makes mortar sticky so it adheres better to the brick or block, and it also makes cured mortar more elastic and less likely to crack.
5. Portland cement mix is used for below-grade brick and block walls. It’s a simple mortar mix of only portland cement and sand.
6. To make your own concrete mix, use three parts sand, two parts gravel, and one part portland cement.
7. To mix concrete, you can rent an electric or gas-powered cement mixer, or mix it by hand in a wheelbarrow.
8. Use a bucket to ensure accurate measurements. Add one part sand, one part portland cement, and one part gravel to the wheelbarrow. Blend well with a pointed shovel.
9. Add remaining dry ingredients—two parts sand and one part gravel—and mix well until thoroughly blended.
10. Smooth out the dry concrete mix in the wheelbarrow and excavate a small hole in the center.
11. Partially fill a 5-gallon bucket with water, then pour about a quart or so into the center of the dry concrete mix.
12. Mix well with the shovel, add a little bit more water, and mix again. Repeat until the concrete is the consistency of cookie dough. If too dry, add a bit more water. If too wet, add a little more dry mix of cement, sand, and gravel in the proper proportions.
13. Excavate the area where you’re planning to pour the concrete. Dig down to solid, undisturbed earth.
14. Build a wooden form out of 2x boards to hold the concrete in place until it cures. Fasten the boards together with 3-inch deck screws.
15. Add several inches of ¾-inch stone to the form and compact it well with a plate compactor or hand tamper.
16. Carefully dump or shovel the concrete from the wheelbarrow into the form, filling it about halfway.
17. Smooth out the concrete, then lay down some ½-inch (No. 4) metal reinforcing bar or welded wire mesh to add structural strength to the concrete.
18. Mix more concrete, if necessary, and fill the form to the top.
19. Smooth out the surface of the concrete with a steel float.
20. Allow the concrete slab to dry for about an hour, then lightly drag a push broom across its surface to add texture.
21. Run an edger around the perimeter of the slab to round over its edges.
22. On larger slabs and walkways, used a groover to cut control joints into the still-soft concrete.
23. Allow the concrete to cure, then carefully unscrew and remove the form boards.
24. Backfill as necessary around the slab with soil.

Concrete
Concrete is a composite material composed of aggregate bonded together with a fluid cement which hardens over time. Most use of the term "concrete" refers to Portland cement concrete or to concretes made with other hydraulic cements, such as ciment fondu. However, road surfaces are also a type of concrete, "asphaltic concrete", where the cement material is bitumen.
In Portland cement concrete (and other hydraulic cement concretes), when the aggregate is mixed together with the dry cement and water, they form a fluid mass that is easily molded into shape. The cement reacts chemically with the water and other ingredients to form a hard matrix which binds all the materials together into a durable stone-like material that has many uses. Often, additives (such as pozzolans or superplasticizers) are included in the mixture to improve the physical properties of the wet mix or the finished material. Most concrete is poured with reinforcing materials (such as rebar) embedded to provide tensile strength, yielding reinforced concrete.

Tom Odell
Thomas Peter Odell (born 24 November 1990) is an English singer-songwriter. He released his debut extended play, Songs from Another Love, in 2012 and won the BRITs Critics' Choice Award in early 2013. His debut studio album, Long Way Down, was issued on 24 June 2013.
Early life
Odell was born in Chichester, West Sussex, to an airline pilot father and a primary school teacher mother. He has an older sister He spent part of his childhood in New Zealand because of his father's job. He was educated at Seaford College He studied piano classically to Grade 7. He began writing his own songs at the age of thirteen but told no one, because he felt it was "uncool".
At the age of eighteen, Odell abandoned plans to attend the University of York and attempted to gain a place at a music college in Liverpool. He appeared at open-mic events nightly: "It was full of humiliation: dragging a keyboard round, turning up to find out I’d been taken off the bill, gangs of lads grabbing the mic off me and laughing... I learnt to perform and learnt what songs work." After a year, he moved back to Chichester after being made redundant from his job as a barman. Using his grandmother's car, he travelled regularly to London to play shows and to put advertisements in music schools. He studied at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music playing as part of the band Tom and the Tides before moving to London in 2010. Tom and The Tides recorded the song "Spider" for the Brighton Institute of Modern Music student album "What's Inside Your Head Vol.3". However, he later decided to become a solo artist because he "didn't want to have to rely on people".

Portland cement
Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general use around the world, used as a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and most non-speciality grout. It was developed from other types of hydraulic lime in England in the mid 19th century and usually originates from limestone. It is a fine powder produced by heating materials in a kiln to form what is called clinker, grinding the clinker, and adding small amounts of other materials. Several types of Portland cement are available with the most common being called ordinary Portland cement (OPC) which is grey in color, but a white Portland cement is also available.
Portland cement is caustic, so it can cause chemical burns, the powder can cause irritation or with severe exposure lung cancer, and can contain some hazardous components such as crystalline silica and hexavalent chromium. Environmental concerns are the high energy consumption required to mine, manufacture, and transport the cement and the related air pollution including the release of greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide), dioxin, NOx, SO2, and particulates.

Partially fill a 5-gallon bucket with water, then pour about a quart or so into the center of the dry concrete mix. 12. Mix well with the shovel, add a little bit more water, and mix again. Repeat until the concrete is the consistency of cookie dough. If too dry, add a bit more water. If too wet, add a little more dry mix of cement, sand, and gravel in the proper proportions. 13. Excavate the area where you’re planning to pour the concrete. Dig down to solid, undisturbed earth. 14. Build a wooden form out of 2x boards to hold the concrete in place until it cures. Fasten the boards together with 3-inch deck screws. 15. Add several inches of ¾-inch stone to the form and compact it well with a plate compactor or hand tamper. 16. Carefully dump or shovel the concrete from the wheelbarrow into the form, filling it about halfway. 17. Smooth out the concrete, then lay down some ½-inch (No. 4) metal reinforcing bar or welded wire mesh to add structural strength to the concrete. 18. Mix more concrete, if necessary, and fill the form to the top. 19. Smooth out the surface of the concrete with a steel float. 20. Allow the concrete slab to dry for about an hour, then lightly drag a push broom across its surface to add texture. 21. Run an edger around the perimeter of the slab to round over its edges. 22. On larger slabs and walkways, used a groover to cut control joints into the still-soft concrete. 23. Allow the concrete to cure, then carefully unscrew and remove the form boards. 24. Backfill as necessary around the slab with soil. Shopping List for How to Work with Concrete:
- Portland cement, gravel, and sand, to make concrete
- 2x boards, for building form
- 3-inch deck screws, to fasten together form boards
- Lime, added to cement and sand to make mortar
- ¾-inch stone, to form solid base for concrete slab
- ½-inch (No. 4) rebar or welded wire mesh, for strengthening the concrete
Tools for How to Work with Concrete:
- Motorized cement mixer, to mix concrete
- Wheelbarrow and pointed shovel, for mixing concrete
- 1- or 2-gallon bucket, to measure dry ingredients
- 5-gallon bucket, for adding water to concrete
- Plate compactor or hand tamper, to compact ¾-inch stone base
- Cordless drill, for screwing together wooden form
- Steel float, to smooth concrete
- Push broom, for adding texture to concrete surface
- Edger, to round over edge of concrete slab
- Groover, for cutting control joints into the concrete
Steps for How to Work with Concrete:
1. Portland cement is the key ingredient in most masonry mixes, including cement, concrete, and mortar.
2. Concrete is composed of portland cement, sand, and aggregate (gravel). When the concrete cures, the aggregate binds the ingredients and makes concrete strong.
3. Mortar, used to build brick and concrete-block walls, is made of portland cement, lime, and sand; it contains no gravel.
4. Lime makes mortar sticky so it adheres better to the brick or block, and it also makes cured mortar more elastic and less likely to crack.
5. Portland cement mix is used for below-grade brick and block walls. It’s a simple mortar mix of only portland cement and sand.
6. To make your own concrete mix, use three parts sand, two parts gravel, and one part portland cement.
7. To mix concrete, you can rent an electric or gas-powered cement mixer, or mix it by hand in a wheelbarrow.
8. Use a bucket to ensure accurate measurements. Add one part sand, one part portland cement, and one part gravel to the wheelbarrow. Blend well with a pointed shovel.
9. Add remaining dry ingredients—two parts sand and one part gravel—and mix well until thoroughly blended.
10. Smooth out the dry concrete mix in the wheelbarrow and excavate a small hole in the center.
11. Partially fill a 5-gallon bucket with water, then pour about a quart or so into the center of the dry concrete mix.
12. Mix well with the shovel, add a little bit more water, and mix again. Repeat until the concrete is the consistency of cookie dough. If too dry, add a bit more water. If too wet, add a little more dry mix of cement, sand, and gravel in the proper proportions.
13. Excavate the area where you’re planning to pour the concrete. Dig down to solid, undisturbed earth.
14. Build a wooden form out of 2x boards to hold the concrete in place until it cures. Fasten the boards together with 3-inch deck screws.
15. Add several inches of ¾-inch stone to the form and compact it well with a plate compactor or hand tamper.
16. Carefully dump or shovel the concrete from the wheelbarrow into the form, filling it about halfway.
17. Smooth out the concrete, then lay down some ½-inch (No. 4) metal reinforcing bar or welded wire mesh to add structural strength to the concrete.
18. Mix more concrete, if necessary, and fill the form to the top.
19. Smooth out the surface of the concrete with a steel float.
20. Allow the concrete slab to dry for about an hour, then lightly drag a push broom across its surface to add texture.
21. Run an edger around the perimeter of the slab to round over its edges.
22. On larger slabs and walkways, used a groover to cut control joints into the still-soft concrete.
23. Allow the concrete to cure, then carefully unscrew and remove the form boards.
24. Backfill as necessary around the slab with soil.
