Bourke Street rant: 'I'm going to kill them all'

A man in a finger gun pose yelled threats at the scene of the Bourke Street attack such as "I'm gonna shoot them all" on Monday morning.

One man was so shaken he called police.

In a statement, police said they received reports about a man making threats near the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Streets at 7.45am.

"Officers spoke to the man briefly from their vehicle and directed him to wait at the scene as they were in moving traffic and unable to park," the statement said. "When the officers returned to the scene the man had disappeared and a patrol of the area was conducted to no avail."

A witness told police the man had fled, possibly boarding a tram from Bourke Street.

Police now hope to speak with the man.

A woman who contacted Fairfax Media said she believed she had seen the same man making threats at the Moonee Ponds shopping strip on Puckle Street.

"[He] was wearing the same black trench coat and had the same shoulder bag. He was saying exactly the same things there. I have personally witnessed him pointing his walking stick, or his umbrella at people, and holding it like a gun.

"He wasn't targeting any specific nationalities, he was just yelling at people walking past, or people dining at the cafes," the woman, who requested not to be named, said.

"He was saying very similar things.

"I last saw him in early December. I remember it was a hot, December day and he was wearing the long, black trench coat."
