Bourke Street grief turns to acts of kindness

In the midst of the Bourke Street tragedy the true spirit of Melburnians continues to be revealed with stories of strangers pulling together to help the victims left injured in the terrible rampage.

"Memories of him are so deeply etched in my mind I automatically connect something I see to a memory of him."

Three-month-old Zachary died at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital from injuries sustained when 26-year-old Dimitrious Gargasoulas allegedly drove his car into the busy CBD mall on the afternoon of January 20. Mr Gargasoulas has been charged with five counts of murder.

Zachary's two-year-old sister, Zara, was also injured in the incident.

Ms Hassan Bryant said she and her husband went and visited memorial sites earlier this week, and read through messages of love and support.

"Amidst all this sadness, I feel so grateful to know there is so much love and kindness all around us," she said.

"I feel for parents who have lost their children, especially in war-torn countries, and feel extremely lucky to have all this support where I am.

"I can't thank enough every single person who has reached out to me."

A funeral for baby Zachary was held at a mosque in Doncaster East on Tuesday last week.

In her eulogy, Ms Hassan Bryant described her baby boy as "perfect".

"He was the true definition of that word in every way," she said.

"From the moment I found out I was pregnant with him right until the time I laid him down to rest, he was just perfect."

Hospitals treated 37 victims in the wake of the Bourke Street attack. Nine patients remained in hospital on Monday night, with one in a critical condition.
