Hello, Goodbye

"Hello, Goodbye" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney. Backed by John Lennon's "I Am the Walrus", it was issued as a non-album single in November 1967, the group's first release since the death of their manager, Brian Epstein. The single was commercially successful around the world, topping charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and several other countries.

McCartney later said that the lyrics take duality as their theme. The song originated when, in response to a question from Beatles aide Alistair Taylor about songwriting, McCartney sat down at a harmonium and asked Taylor to say the opposite of whatever he said. The completed song includes a musical coda, which was improvised by the Beatles when they were recording the track in October 1967. Unimpressed with the composition, Lennon pushed for "I Am the Walrus" to be the single's A-side, but McCartney and the band's producer, George Martin, opted for the more commercial-sounding "Hello, Goodbye". The Beatles produced three promotional films for the song, one of which was shown on The Ed Sullivan Show in America. Due to regulations against lip-syncing in Britain, none of the clips were aired there.

The Nature of Things

The Nature of Things (also, The Nature of Things with David Suzuki) is a Canadian television series of documentary programs. It debuted on CBC Television on November 6, 1960. Many of the programs document nature and the effect that humans have on it. The program "was one of the first mainstream programs to present scientific evidence on a number of environmental issues, including nuclear power and genetic engineering". The series is named after an epic poem by Roman philosopher Lucretius: "De rerum natura" — On the Nature of Things.

History

The first host was Donald Ivey, with Patterson Hume co-hosting many episodes. Following Ivey’s departure, the second season continued with several guest hosts, including Lister Sinclair, Donald Crowdis, and John Livingston. Since 1979, it has been hosted by David Suzuki. The series has won many awards and Suzuki has won three Gemini Awards and one ACTRA Award as best host. Documentarian William Whitehead has also been a frequent writer for the series.

CBC News Network

CBC News Network (formerly CBC Newsworld) is a Canadian English language news channel owned and operated by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). It broadcasts into over 10 million homes in Canada, and is a Category C specialty channel. It is the world's third-oldest television service of this nature, after CNN in the United States and Sky News in the United Kingdom.

CBC News Network's French-language counterpart is Ici RDI, also owned by the CBC.

History

With CNN already being widely available in Canada, during the 1980s both private and public Canadian broadcasters began to apply for a licence for a similar 24-hour news service in Canada. In 1987 the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) awarded a licence to the CBC. Its initial launch was delayed several times: first when Allarcom, who had filed a competing application for an all-news channel, chose to appeal the CRTC decision; second, when the federal cabinet issued a directive to the CBC to revise its service plan for the network to include private commercial broadcasters and to launch a parallel French language service; and finally when cable companies were reluctant to add the service just five months after a similar launch of numerous other channels.

CBC Television

CBC Television (also known as simply "CBC") is a Canadian broadcast television network that is owned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the national English-language public broadcaster (its French-language counterpart is Ici Radio-Canada Télé, which is operated by the CBC corporate entity's Société Radio-Canada division, and is headquartered in Montreal). The network began operations on September 6, 1952.

Headquartered in Toronto, CBC Television is available through over-the-air television stations across Canada, many of which are owned by the CBC. Almost all of the CBC's programming is produced in Canada. Although CBC Television is supported by public funding, commercial advertising revenue supplements the network, in contrast to CBC Radio and public broadcasters from several other countries, which are commercial-free.

Overview

CBC Television provides a complete 24-hour network schedule of news, sports, entertainment and children's programming; in most cases, feeding the same programming at the same local times nationwide, except to the Newfoundland Time Zone, where programs air 30 minutes "late".
