Haiti (i/ˈheɪti/; French: Haïti [a.iti]; Haitian Creole: Ayiti [ajiti]), officially the Republic of Haiti (French: République d'Haïti; Haitian Creole: Repiblik Ayiti), is a country in the western hemisphere, and is located on the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) in size and has an estimated 10.6 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the third-most populous country in the Caribbean as a whole.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, Europeans first became aware of the island on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic. When Columbus first landed in Haiti, he had thought he had found India or Asia. Deciding to establish the first settlement in the area, a contingent of men were left at an outpost christened La Navidad because of the wreck to their sunken flagship, the Santa Maria, that occurred at Christmas, north of what is now Limonade. The island was named Hispaniola and claimed by Spain, which ruled until the early 17th century. Competing claims and settlements by the French led to the western portion of the island being ceded to France, which named it Saint-Domingue. The development of sugarcane plantations, worked by slaves brought from Africa, led to the colony being among the most lucrative in the world.

Once a major tourist destination in the 70's, after wars, epidemics, and dictatorships, Haiti fell off the vacation map. It's still on the State Department's travel warning list, but the Haitian government says it's safe and fun for Americans to visit. Vocativ went to Haiti and talked to the minister of tourism, tour guides, police, to explore what a vacation in Haiti would look like.
Haiti's Minimum wage is 225 gourdes which is $5 a day, YES a DAY, this is just greed. What justify these fees. Who is truly benefiting? If you haven't please watch the first video http://youtu.be/73ipilGinNA Many people are wondering why I made this video. I actually think the video speaks for itself. I've done research among the Haitian community for the past 8 years through conversation; why is it that they don't visit Haiti more often? You need to have money to go to Haiti, Ayiti twò chè. I've even read articles saying the same thing. Yes, I used my family as an example because it was more realistic, however this is what the diaspora goes through . Haiti's minimum wage is 0.61 cent an hour how are the people benefiting with this inflation. Haiti does have a lot to offer but we can...

Traveling from the DR to Haiti. About Me // I am 25, from Marietta, Georgia and I started this channel in 2013 in my final semester of my college. After graduating from Auburn University in Alabama I spent four months in Europe and tried my hand at vloging. You can watch the whole series here and forgive me for filming it on my iPhone. Right after traveling I moved to DC where I lived for two years. Last summer I backpacked through Central America and produced a 10 part vlog series about that as well. I currently am traveling on World Race. The World Race is an 11 month mission trip to 11 countries. I post videos almost every day, so subscribe and stay a while if you want to see more. - All filmed on a Canon S120, Canon G7x and Canon T3i. Thanks for watching, Julia

Haiti Travel Video Guide: Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Tourists who are unsettled by grinding poverty probably should visit elsewhere. However, for those with patience and an open mind, Haiti reveals a rich culture that is unique among post-colonial nations. It is extremely helpful when traveling in Haiti to have a local contact, through a church, a hotel, or just through making friends with someone. Experiences like dining locally, riding on a tap-tap, or strolling through one of the insanely crowded outdoor markets are great fun and very worth doing but are much safer and easier if you have a trusted Haitian to go along as a guide and interpreter. Travel video about destination The Caribbean. Haiti is the starting point of this journey in the Caribbean. Since the time of Columbus it has been the European idyll of paradise set amid a distant ocean. But beyond the dream is the fact that its original inhabitants were wiped out and replaced with African slaves. Now independent states have gradually emerged from the dark shadows of an inglorious past.Jamaica is another Caribbean paradise and its second largest city, Montego Bay, is the starting point for tourists from all over the world. One of its attractions is Harmony Hall, a fine manor house situated on a turn of the century plantation. Kingston is the capital of Jamaica and the island’s political, economic and cultural centre, a former pirate stronghold that is a lively mixture of j...

Haiti, mon pays
Wounded mother I'll never see
Ma famille, set me free
Throw my ashes into the sea
Mes cousins jamais nes
Hantent les nuits de Duvalier
Rien n'arrete nos espirits
Guns can't kill what soldiers can't see
In the forest we are hiding
Unmarked graves where flowers grow
Hear the soldiers angry yelling
In the river we will go
Tous les morts-nes forment une armee
Soon we will reclaim the earth
All the tears and all the bodies
Bring about our second birth
Haiti, never free
N'aie pas peur de sonner l'alarme
Tes enfants sont partis
