Cardiff: 4 Feb-9.15am – Court solidarity for anti-Nato activist (Wales, UK)

Friday, January 30th, 2015

The last trial of the people arrested at last year’s NATO protests in Wales is due to be played out in court next Wednesday in Cardiff. This time the police and CPS are trying to stitch up someone up for assaulting an officer. A demonstration is planned outside the Cardiff Magistrate’s at 9.15am on 4th February.

Almost all of the other people arrested at the protests against NATO and the DPRTE arms fair have had their charges dropped. The cases demonstrate, once again, that the cops will make arrests and harass demonstrators any way they can with the aim of stamping out resistance. They also show the urgent need for collective solidarity for those experiencing police repression.

Timeline of actions during the NATO conference (UK)

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

During the course of the week of action against the NATO summit a diverse range of actions were taken by many different groups and individuals. Here is a summary of what happened:

Friday 29th August
– Stop NATO camp set up at Tredelgar park in Newport
– BAE systems attacked with fire in Filton and vehicles torched at army cadet base in Bristol as acts of resistance against NATO

Saturday 30th August
– Mass march and radical bloc against NATO in Newport
– Effigy of Obama burned in Cardiff

Sunday 31st AugustAction against securitisation and repression at the ‘fence’ in Cardiff

Monday 1st September – Sabcats anti-austerity action at Newport jobcentre and army recruitment centre.

Tuesday 2nd September
– No borders noise demo at UK Borders Agency in Cardiff
– Activist locks himself inside Cardiff Keep in Cardiff Castle where the NATO dinner is due to be held

Wednesday 3rd September – Activists hand in a demand for the arrest of NATO leaders to police in Newport, based on evidence leaked by Chelsea Manning of war crimes.

Thursday 4th September
– No to NATO March on Celtic Manor from centre of Newport and mass demo against the NATO dinner at Cardiff Castle
– Activists chalk out the connections between NATO and arms companies in Newport

Friday 5th September
– Activists again try to present evidence of war crimes at Newport police station
Occupation of Barclays Bank in Newport calling for Barclays to ditch their shares in Israeli arms company, Elbit. Four activists glue themselves inside the bank

Saturday 6th September – Solidarity demonstrations outside Newport Magistrates Court in support of Barclays occupiers.

The struggle continues

Last week we saw a diverse struggle against NATO in Cymru. Marches against NATO in the streets of Newport and Cardiff; actions against the forces driving war in the banks and the securitised zones; workshops and discussions at the camp about connected issues from Gaza to police repression at the camp; people spreading the word in a hundred different ways, from conversations with locals, to the camp, to the web. But the struggles against capitalism and militarism are not a one-day, or even a one-week, event. The actions taken this week by Stop NATO Cymru, the Anarchist Action Network and other organisations are a small part of building up a movement capable of bringing about radical change.

So, when we look back, does it make sense to ask whether we “succeeded” in the week of action? We think it does. If one more mind went beyond the distortions of the mainstream media because of what we did, then yes we ‘succeeded’. If one more pair of feet was spurred onto the streets by what we did, then we succeeded. And if one more pair of hands joined with ours, yes, we succeeded. In the coming struggles, those hands will again pick up the tools to take action, until the last drone is smashed. We hope to see you there.

Cardiff: No Borders Noise Demo outside the UK Home Office Buildings (Wales, UK)

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

On the 2nd of September, at 12pm around 50 people gathered outside the Cardiff Home Office Buildings for the noise demo planned as part of the Stop NATO Cymru week of action. In the past, there have been monthly noise demos by No Borders South Wales group, with many different points of focus, ID cards, destitution, dawn-raids and anti-deportation. The focus of this particular demo was how border controls relate to militarism and the NATO war machine. This was called because NATO are part of the samesystem that divides and isolates through borders. Borders are a mechanism for the divide and rule of working class people. Borders kill innocent people around the world as does militarism. (more…)

Dark Nights #41 : ‘Against all States – Against all Gods’ – Sept 2014 (ACN)

Tuesday, September 16th, 2014

24 pages B&W : Dark Nights #41

International anti-prisons insurrectional newsletter Dark Nights is back after a summer break. Front page news is the communique by ‘FAI “Sacco & Vanzetti” Circle of Propaganda by Life & by Deed’ for the incendiary attack prior to the NATO summit in Wales, against BAE Systems Arms Development Centre. News of this new anarchist urban guerrilla attack taking place has been suppressed by the regime, as they are frightened of the spread of the anti-system attacks and the damage to the image of the blood-soaked company. The fiery attack took place in Filton, Bristol, where many military-industrial-technological companies are situated, and proved that the direct action groups can strike the military-industrial complex in their closed sites.

Primary article by individualist nihilist-anarchist comrade Venona Q. is about authoritarian fundamentalism and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The brief article is about raw power and the total liberation war against all Gods and States. Against “progress”, the “West”, “democracy” and “civilisation”, the writer sounds a sharply critical and vengeful cry against the mullahs, militias, bureaucrats and fundamentalist murderers of the Middle East and the West alike. Reminding us of the continuous visions of the fight for human dignity against dominion by concepts, authorities and the power of death.

There’s an incomplete round-up of direct action sabotages, attacks and riots in our chronology, compiling incidents since late May 2014, and a complimentary section giving coverage to the International Week for Anarchist Prisoners which recently took place, that was organised by the world-wide Anarchist Black Cross groups, counter-information groups, action cells and others. During the last few months there have been intense efforts taking place in prisons across Europe, as prisoners in Greece carried out a campaign and hungerstrike against the Type C prison plans, where Domokos prison will be turned into a huge Guantanamo. The hungerstrike is finished now, but the prisoners of Greece and their friends and relatives have vowed to undertake an struggle by all means. This has now spread into the prisons of Germany and Switzerland, as prisoners there also found common cause and solidarity with the fight taking place and carried out their own hungerstrike mobilisation. This kind of trans-border action is a vital sign of a re-construction of the new internationalist struggle happening and we are with the prisoners in struggle in our hearts, words, thoughts and actions.

And there is the usual selection of prisoners letters, including the text by imprisoned anarchist Carlos ‘Chivo’ Lopez in Mexico about informality, an article by the imprisoned members cell of the Conspiracy of Cells of Fire about negation, coherence and refusal in the active sense during the trial prosecuting them, plus news reports and more writings from our imprisoned comrades enabling their wishes, dreams and struggles to escape beyond the walls of the prisons.

Tamara Sol, Francisco Solar, Gabriel Pombo da Silva, Graziano Mazzarelli, Chiara Zenobi, Nikos Maziotis, dozens and dozens more… To the streets!

Neither Ukrainian nor Russian! – Let’s develop our own camp, the third camp, that of social revolution! (Třídní válka)

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

Analysis from Left-communist comrades Třídní válka / Class War:

When we wrote some months ago in our text, “War preparations between Ukraine and Russia – Show or Reality?i that the conditions for a new war ripen in Ukraine, many comrades expressed doubts or even disagreements with such a categorical statement. Now we can say that the conflict in Ukraine has clearly switched from the “cold” phase to the “hot” one and that what we are currently witnessing in the east of the country is the war by all definitions. From Lugansk on the border with Russia to Mariupol on the Black Sea coast two military forces compete in daily clashes when trying to enlarge the area under their control, they fight on the ground as well as in the air, in countryside as well as in industrial centers, artilleries shell villages, air forces bomb cities (under the pretext that their enemy uses the inhabitants as living shields), men, women, children die under the bombs and missiles… In four months of armed conflict more than 2,000 civilians and militaries have been killed and 6,000 others injured; 117,000 proletarians have been internally displaced and 730,000 others found refuge in Russia. Just as we were on the point of finishing this article dead bodies are strewn over the streets of Donetsk, caught in a government’s offensive stranglehold.

In the same text we also wrote that the only reply of the proletariat to the war is to organize and develop revolutionary defeatism, i.e. practically refuse to join one or the other camp, on the contrary to build connections between proletarians from both sides of the conflict through the struggle against both bourgeoisies. As even in this field things developed, our text deserves (three month after publishing) a post-scriptum.

This text is based on information drawn from different sources (that we quote in footnotes) from militant blogs to official media. This short description of events in the Ukraine required hours and hours of careful work, searching information, reading texts, watching videos, comparing different data etc. We would like to emphasize two things: Firstly, the fact that the events that we describe here were not covered by BBC or Euronews does not mean that they did not happen, that we invented them (various leftist sources and also Ukrainian and Russian media describe them). Secondly, it is clear that the news that we get from the Ukraine are chaotic, incomplete and sometimes contradictory. This however doesn’t mean that we should give up our attempt to grasp what is going on there. We believe that we should face a selective reporting of the state with a critical and radical position of anti-capitalist movement; we should develop and share information and analysis that see the world through a prism of revolutionary perspective.

***

War ideology (either based on a defence of a united national state on one side or the right for a self-determination and pro-Russian sympathies on the other side) is taking root in Ukraine, civil society organizations organize fund-raising campaign to support the army, popes bless arms of this or that side, and television repeats scenes of babushkas supplying armed man with their last jar of compote. Not all proletarians however let themselves to be brainwashed with the war propaganda of one or the other side, not all of them want to sacrifice themselves “for their homeland”. Expressions of practical refuse of war slaughter appear in always greater numbers and both sides of the conflict have big difficulties to recruit new manpower for their mutual massacre. (more…)

Filton, Bristol: 'FAI "Sacco & Vanzetti" Circle of Propaganda by Life & by Deed' take responsibility for an incendiary attack against BAE Arms Development Centre in the context of the NATO Summit (UK)

Saturday, August 30th, 2014

In the context of the NATO summit in Newport, a cell of the Federazione Anarchica Informale (FAI) has struck BAE Systems in Filton, Bristol:

We mounted our attack against the BAE Systems arms factory in the Filton area of Bristol by setting a fire against the fuel tank outside the onsite Advanced Technology Centre (Impact Facility – High Power Electro Magnetic Facility section) on August 29th. Today we now announce carrying this out in the context of the NATO summit in Newport in five days. Britain is rife with military industrial complex structures all year round and everyone can draw her or his own conclusion.

BAE Systems are possibly the largest so called defence multinational and they are Britain’s largest manufacturing employer. Some of their major projects with the British Armed Forces alone are the NATO Eurofighter jets and nuclear submarines.

From artillery and aerial drones with specialist communication systems to the Israeli Air Force F16 fighter bombers and the shackles used on detainees in Guantánamo Bay you can find BAE Systems across the world behind imperialist conquest and the death or immiseration of millions. The company now has branches in criminal intelligence and investigation that deal with matters like cyber threats to the banking industry and was contracted by the European Union to devise the Strategic Crime and Immigration Information Management System : essentially an international police database. They are in line to profit from managing the transition of analytics from analysis of physical locations to analysis of individuals and how they interact for the advantage of law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The factory where we hit produces hardware including that of naval frigates and combat vehicles and there hundreds of staff with the Advanced Technology Centre design cutting edge weaponry for global markets. Just a few of their specialities are :

Abnormal behaviour detection & video analytics
Bio-inspired technology
Micro & nanotechnology and smart materials
Technologies for covert & secure operations

BAE Systems are at the forefront of military robotics as well as the latest innovations such as cloaking devices for tanks and body armour formed from liquid to make the modern flesh and blood killing machine even more agile and deadly. Look to their armoured land vehicles which are autonomous of human supervision (like those patrolling the Israeli-Gaza and Israeli-Lebanon border zones) or the tiny above ground or under water machines modelled on insects for audio-visual reconnaissance to see a sign of our future they are preparing.

The company make explicit reference to the age of asymmetric warfare and the crossover from use of their products on the battle field to use within society at large : a common phenomenon in the sector. A case to illustrate this is the high power BAE Systems night vision gear finding its way into the civilian surveillance camera market to advance the project making open prisons out of the urban centres and anywhere it is needed to protect the system and its commodities.

Need we write more to demonstrate how technological development under the civilised power structure is leading us to a desolate automated landscape of near total dominance and potential annihilation? The hour is late and the brave new world with amplified demand for submission will be the price for our indifference.

To go after them on what they thought was safe ground is what we decided to return in kind for the business BAE Systems have chosen. Through the attack we are with those incarcerated for their own path towards anarchy :

Gianluca Iacovacci and Adriano Antonacci
Marco Camenisch
Nicola Gai and Alfredo Cospito

Every year they spend inside, the destructive acts will multiply. Honour also to fighters of days gone by who walked armed against dominance in their time.

Attack on Army Cadet base in Bristol (UK)

Friday, August 29th, 2014

We took action in the build up to the NATO summit who will meet in Newport to continue their power mongering disguised as benevolent international peacekeeping. To be clear, this ‘peace’ they want to keep is that of the capitalist order: the ‘peace’ of producing, consuming and obeying.

NATOs rhetoric of democracy and human rights hides its aggressive colonisation force as it moves into areas strategic for resources and political control. Meanwhile, on the ‘home front’ the role of suppressing the ‘internal enemy’ is quite clear. NATO, aware of the insurrection that flared up during the ‘Arab Spring’ just below the Mediterranean border outlined the ‘Urban Operations in the year 2020’ report envisaging “scenarios of armies engaged manually to suffocate the revolts of the poor in the suburbs of big western towns”. The powers that be are clearly honing this type of counter-insurgency warfare as much as interstate military conflict in the darkening future of further societal breakdown, economic and ecological catastrophes.

We chose the Army Cadet base in north-east Bristol, burning 1 car and 1 minibus. as an example of the ways in which militarisation works its way into the fabric of daily life. In recent years, Schools Commissioner Elizabeth Sidewell suggested that every school should have a combined Cadet force “to increase the armed forces everyday contact and influence with young people” in order to ensure the continued support of the population. The presence of the military even in schools is presented as just a natural part of ‘community’ and that competition, discipline and top down obedience are necessary characteristics.

We are in solidarity with those who took to the streets 3 years ago in August 2011, as well as those who have recently been on the streets of Ferguson, another area currently receiving military treatment. Following these insurrectionary moments the government saw one of the functions of its push for more cadets and military involvement in education in general as being to keep young people out of trouble and from being ‘anti-social’. The Phoenix School in Oldham, military academies and others are all manifestations of this promotion of blind discipline and nationalism.

FIRE TO THE MILITARY!

Call Out – Stop NATO action against securitisation and policing (Wales, UK)

Monday, August 25th, 2014

From Cardiff to Gaza – tear down their barrier!

In preparation for the NATO summit, the authorities have put a giant fucking wall around parts of Cardiff and Newport. Local people do not want this wall – it prevents access to public grounds and services, disrupts essential travel and is an ugly visible reminder of the increasingly militarised zone that Cardiff and Newport have become in advance of this Summit.

Whilst they are in no way equivalent, we are mindful of the daily plight of the Palestinian people, hemmed in by giant walls that prevent them from accessing sufficient provisions, medical care or shelter from the prolific murderous Israeli attacks that have recently claimed thousands of lives.

We stand against all those states and corporations which would seek to profit from human misery, division and securitisation.

Meet us on Sunday, 31th August, at 3pm at the Nye Bevan statue in Cardiff (west end of Queen Street, opposite the castle) to make our feelings known.

Bring Palestinian flags and banners.

Report: Stop NATO Cymru Day of Action against Militarism (UK)

Monday, July 28th, 2014

As part of our coverage of the anti-NATO initiative in UK, we spread this report:

On the morning of Friday, July 25th, supporters of Stop NATO Cymru took action in London and Cardiff, locking themselves to the front doors of missile developer MBDA, occupying the HQ of arms company Airbus Group and closing the Armed Forces Careers Centre in Cardiff by occupying the roof. This was part of an ongoing anti-militarist campaign in the run up to September’s NATO Summit in Newport, targeting all institutions which perpetuate violence on a global scale.

Cardiff Armed Forces "Careers Centre" closedCardiff Armed Forces “Careers Centre” closed

MBDA is jointly owned by arms companies Airbus Group (37.5%), BAE Systems (37.5%) and Finmecanica (25%), companies guilty of providing arms used by Israel to bombard communities, demolish hospitals and murder innocent children in schools. Palestinian solidarity activists stood with us against these monsters, with Israel having used British bombs on playing children, family homes, schools, independent journalists, rescue vehicles and hospitals in the last week alone.

In solidarity with Stop NATO Cymru, anti-miltarist activists from Stop the Arms Fair entered the lobby and picketed the entrance to the London HQ of Airbus Group (aka EADS). Airbus Group is a major profiteer of war. They manufacture jets, drones (including some with nuclear warheads) and surveillance technology. They are the second largest arms producer in Europe, with investments in authoritarian regimes such as Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kazakhstan. Airbus has recently announced new contracts worth £50mil, and have urged the arms industry to take ‘full economic advantage’ of the NATO Summit. The summit is an opportunity for them to showcase their killing machines and  blood-stained business through NATO procurement. Stop NATO Cymru opposes the NATO war machine, arms production and the murder of anyone for corporate profit.

When the rich declare war, the poor die. When the rich declare war, the poor die.

Earlier this month the British Army launched a recruitment drive entitled ‘More Than Meets the Eye’, aiming to dispel myths surrounding life in the forces, boost their falling recruitment figures and secure the flow of “a new stream of young blood” as head of recruiting, Major General  Chris Tickell, so aptly put it.

They are right about one thing, there is more to life in the army than meets our eyes – more to what the media, charities and the state show of the idealised soldier. Waves of forced redundancies are leaving thousands unemployed, many of them young people, promised adventure and reward at the recruiting office before being spat into the jobcentre, often injured, with thousands wounded over the last decade.

Even those who keep their job are constantly exploited by the state. The fact is that every individual within the armed forces – from the musician to the infantryman – is part of an effort to further the state’s  expansionist agenda. In Afghanistan, war for oil saw the deaths of almost 4,000 coalition troops and an estimated 20,000 Afghan civilians killed to bring NATO’s version of democracy to the Afghan people. Now we see conflict flaring in Ukraine, with British companies having armed the Russian dictatorship, America throwing its weight behind a neo-Nazi backed government and the  people of Ukraine and the world suffering the consequences.

We took action to show that we will not stand by and watch ordinary people suffer in the wars of the wealthy. We are anti-militarist, opposed to states, their armies and the world that creates them. When NATO brings its circus to Newport in September, we will make our feelings known.

NATO is the militarist juggernaut that encourages military spending in times of austerity, stokes the flames of conflict in places like Ukraine and represents the armed wing of capitalist exploitation. In spite of the power behind NATO – and all militarist institutions in a world of government by violence – we will keep up our fight on the streets, doing all that we can to bring change, until every gun is cold, every bomb is dead and every cage is empty.

Police harassment in Merthyr against anti-NATO activists (Wales, UK)

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014

As part of our coverage of the anti-NATO events in Wales, UK, here is a report of a police harassment taking place against stopnatocymru:

On Wednesday, July 9th, the otherwise successful Day of Action against Nato in Merthyr Tydfil was marred by an intrusive police presence, the attempted intimidation of Stop Nato Cymru activists and the harassment of a public meeting that afternoon.

As soon as a stall was set up in the town centre the police made their presence known, with a mixture of “Community Support” officers and actual coppers surrounding the table – groups of two standing at either end of the street and four walking passed repeatedly, taking leaflets and demonstrating their cutting edge intelligence gathering techniques with questions such as “What you up to?”, “Are you moving on?” and “Are you doing this anywhere else?”. Stop NATO : Anarchists shut down Barclays Bank in Cardiff (Wales, UK)

Wednesday, May 7th, 2014

As part of our coverage of anti-NATO events this year in UK, we reproduce this report:

The campaigners formed a Radical Bloc on the Trades Council-organised May Day march, breaking from the main route to take action against the bank instead of going to listen to speeches by union officials at the Trades Council’s rally.

A local anarchist and member of the Stop NATO Cymru campaign group said: “We took part in the May Day march to draw attention to the struggles of workers all over the world against exploitation and violent oppression which is exacerbated by arms producers here in the UK. (more…)
