Trump defends his controversial 'Muslim ban' on Twitter

The President of the United States has reiterated his belief that America needs to strengthen its borders - just hours after thousands protested (right) against his controversial executive order authorizing the temporary detention of travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries. The president issued a scathing statement insisting that 'this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting.' Trump said his new policy is 'similar to what President Obama did in 2011 when he banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six months.' And he credited the Obama White House with creating the list of seven countries that he started with - Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The Homeland Security Department has said a temporary stay granted by a federal judge on Friday will not stop Trump's plan from being put in place. 'President Trump's Executive Orders remain in place - prohibited travel will remain prohibited, and the US government retains its right to revoke visas at any time if required for national security or public safety,' a statement read. On Saturday evening the federal court for the Eastern District of New York issued the stay after only two of 12 refugees held at JFK airport were released. They had been held for between 14 and 24 hours. Travelers around the country were detained, with about 375 travelers impacted by the order including those who were stopped before they could board U.S.-bound planes. That is less than one-tenth of 1 per cent of travelers to America. The White House insisted Sunday that green card holders won't be affected by Friday's order, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers already had broad authority to question them if they arrive from terror-prone countries.

The President signed an executive order on Friday which prevents any citizen of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for 90 days. One of those countries is Somalia, the birthplace of Sir Mo.

More than 250,000 people who were born in Iraq, Iran and Somalia have dual British nationality but the Foreign Office has confirmed they will not be prevented from entering the US.

Critics are campaigning for the President's planned state visit to be postponed or even cancelled but this would be an absurd over-reaction and hugely damaging to British interests.

Donald Trump has triggered chaos and confusion for travellers across the world, after issuing a 90-day travel ban for nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

KATIE HOPKINS: Trump's immigration crackdown sends message

Donald Trump's 90-day ban on seven Muslim countries is in place to achieve one thing and one thing only: he wants you to understand America has borders, and from now on it's going to protect them. President Trump said, 'We only want to admit those who will support our country and love deeply our people.' Think of it less as a Muslim ban, and more as an American invitation. If you support America and will put America first, you will be welcome. If you cannot bring yourself to condone the actions of those who commit terror in the name of your god, probably best stay in what's left of your home.

In addition to Trump's 'extreme vetting' of immigrants entering the US, his administration is reportedly considering asking foreign visitors for social media information and cell phone contacts'.

The image of Donald Trump suddenly grasping hold of Theresa May's hand as they walked together at the White House in the US led to speculation he has a rare phobia.
