Sudan (Arabic: السودان as-Sūdān, English pronunciation (US) i/suˈdæn/, (GB) /suːˈdɑːn/), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), is a country in north-east Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. It is the third largest country in Africa. The River Nile divides the country into eastern and western halves. Its predominant religion is Islam.
Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations, such as the Kingdom of Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë and others, most of which flourished along the Nile. During the pre-dynastic period Nubia and Nagadan Upper Egypt were identical, simultaneously evolved systems of pharaonic kingship by 3300 BC. By virtue of its proximity to Egypt, the Sudan participated in the wider history of the Near East inasmuch as it was Christianized by the 6th century, and Islamized in the 15th. As a result of Christianization, the Old Nubian language stands as the oldest recorded Nilo-Saharan language (earliest records dating to the 9th century). Sudan was the largest country in Africa and the Arab world until 2011, when South Sudan separated into an independent country, following an independence referendum. Sudan is now the third largest country in Africa (after Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and also the third largest country in the Arab world (after Algeria and Saudi Arabia).

South Sudan has what many business people describe as a "war economy"; people there are struggling to keep their companies afloat as a result of the brutal conflict which broke out between government and rebel forces in December 2013. Even if the recent peace deal holds, it will take some time for the economy to recover. Despite the challenges of civil war there are entrepreneurs and businesses with big hopes. But they have to deal with the lack of dollars in the country, and that has been driving up prices every day. Catherine Byaruhanga reports from Juba.
Sudan is feeling the economic crunch after the break away of South Sudan.
Tuesday, April 24 2013 marked the opening of a new session of the South Sudanese parliament. President Salva Kiir vowed to keep the country at peace and to gradually return South Sudan to prosperity after a year of economic turmoil. This comes after South Sudan resumed oil production to boost their economy, a move seen to improve the living conditions of the country's citizens. CCTV's Noel Mwakugu reports
An exhibition in Khartoum is hoping to show the damage caused by U.S. sanctions on Sudan since they began in 1997. The economic, trade and financial embargos were put in place after reports emerged that the Sudanese government was offering shelter to a terrorist in the mid1990s.
A delegation of representatives from the government and from the private sector of Sudan was in Brazil to offer partnership opportunities to entrepreneurs interested in doing business in Sudanese lands and to find out more about Brazilian agricultural programs.
Oil fields in the north of South Sudan are coming under threat from the fighting between the government and the country's rebels. They are vital not just to Juba but also to Sudan, which serves as a major export route. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports from Khartoum.
South Sudan Economy, One Year After Independence
As the conflict in South Sudan continues, many businessmen are being forced to leave the country, causing even more damage to the youngest nation economy. CCTV's Michael Baleke had the opportunity to speak with some of them.
Economic experts in South Sudan now warn that the country's sliding economy might get worse if a solution to the current crisis facing the country is not found soon. Commodity prices have almost doubled as the country's currency continues to slump against the dollar. Kofa Mrenje reports from South Sudan's capital Juba
The impact of the South Sudan conflict spread beyond the small, micro and medium enterprises that largely did business the Africa’s newest nation. According to Managing Director Standard chartered Bank Herman Kasekende, even commercial bank business has taken a hit along side the Uganda shilling’s exchange rate. While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. (16 Dec 2016) LEAD IN: Sudan blends seaside treasures with ancient heritage, and has the potential to be a world leader in tourism. But its poor infrastructure and lack of resources has held the industry back. STORY-LINE: The scene around Sanganeb Reef is like any you would see in an exotic beach location - clear blue seas, distinctive landmarks and a yacht or two moored in the bay. With an enviable coastline, ancient monuments and desert trekking, Sudan has the potential to be a major tourist destination. But for years, poor infrastructure and a lack of qualified staff have kept the African country off the tourist map. "Sudan is going through a new phase now that requires reaching out to the world. And it is aware of that. And tourism is one of the most important means of reachi...

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims. CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN a...
The Project for the New American Century (PNAC) was a neo-conservative think tank that operated between 1997 and 2006. It openly advocated for the total global military domination by the United States. PNAC members held the highest-level positions in the George W. Bush administration, including Robert Kagan (husband of Victoria Nuland) , Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and others. PNAC is noteworthy for its focus on Iraq, a preoccupation that began before Bush became president and predates the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (Which begs the question – how authentic was 9/11?) Some of the members of PNAC, such as Vin Weber, were also government lobbyists for military industrial companies such as Lockheed Martin, and other Fortune 500 companies. The more war, the hi...

Just a few kilometres beyond Sudan’s metropolis of Khartoum in Omdurman is the splendid burial place of the famous 19th century Islamic leader, Al Mahdi, one of the most important exponents of Sufism. It was also Al Mahdi who invaded Khartoum, a city founded by the Egyptians that was later ruled by the British. In the 19th century the infamous warriors of the Hadendoa people were also the courageous soldiers of Al-Mahdi´s army. Today they live in the environs of the Red Sea Mountains where the camel is the only means of transport.
