There is a swimming pool, childrens' playground and a tennis court in a communal area only a short walk away from the house.

There are stunning views over the valley, abundant wildlife right at your door. The bird life is immense and king parrots will eat out of your hand. There are bellbirds in the adjacent forest for beautiful sounds during the day. Unfortunately because of the fragility of the native fauna, pets are not allowed on the property.

There are numerous outdoor activities such as bushwalking, horseriding, fishing, tennis and swimming on the property. Close by in Dungog township, there are interesting shops to browse through, an historic cinema and an excellent golf course that welcomes visitors.

The house is situated 20 mins from Dungog on sealed roads and there is only 1km of well-kept dirt road from the road to the house. The property is right next to Chichester Dam and State Forest.

CHICHESTER STATE FOREST - DUNGOG

Picturesque Chichester State Forest is located in the Lower Barrington Tops and offers free picnic and camping grounds, the majority located near creeks/rivers.

Telegherry, Frying Pan, Currawong and Coachwood camping areas are located in the lush south-eastern side of the forest, best accessed from Dungog. White Rock, Old Camp and Pademelon Park are camping areas on the south-western side of the forest, best accessed from Gresford. Allyn River Forest Park, also in this area, is a great place for a picnic whilst the famous Ladies Well swimming hole is within a short distance of camping areas.

Temperatures vary considerably between the foothills (170 metres) and the Barrington Plateau (1,577 metres). Night temperatures regularly drop below zero from June to November. Campers are advised to pack cold/wet weather gear, and take their own fresh drinking water. Dogs are permitted on leads, as is bushwalking, swimming, trail-bike and four-wheel driving.

Location

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ideal Family Cottage Very comfortable stay. Plenty of room for the 7 of us. Kids loved the bird life and other critters at night ( eg. possum ) . Pool and tennis court enjoyed, although further than expected from cottage. Enjoyed drives around district.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All home comforts plus fireside and bellbirds We are back home from our week’s holiday including our fabulous stay at Gumnut Cottage. You have a wonderfully private setting with enough view across the valley to not feel closed in. The birds are fun and we fed them of course. Plenty of space for the three of us and plenty of firewood to get the fire heating the place beautifully. There is something special about a wood fire and we really enjoyed setting and stoking it to get the maximum efficiency – it worked as we were as warm as toast. We travelled about a bit on Friday but it was raining in the afternoon so returned early to the fire and a home cooked casserole and stayed home on Saturday and enjoyed walking the area, the sunshine, feeding the birds and the restaurant for dinner – then back to the fire for a late night coffee and port. It was just the end to the holiday we wanted and I earned brownie points from the family for finding Gumnut Cottage. We have all voted to return.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wildlife on the doorstep! A well located and private cottage. The outdoor area and large balcony were fantastic, and visited by all sorts of bird life. The King Parrots were especially friendly and ate seed from our hands. The cottage is large and well equipped, and the combustion heater makes the entire cottage cozy in winter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Below average! The location is great with a 20mins drive to Dungog, a very cute town. We were 4 adults, a 3 year old, a 9 months old and a 5 months old. The accommodation suited our size. We had to ask for re-stock of fire kinderling and we had a 9 months old crawler so found it tiring as there was no wire cage around the fire so we couldn't put our daughter down. Too much money was taken out of our bank account before our arrival and 2 weeks later I am still awaiting the money.
