THE TRIP Corsica

THE ITINERARY Expect the unexpected in Corsica .You can plan all day, but eventually things happen on your holiday that you cannot script. I took the "fast" ferry from Nice to Ajaccio and that took around four hours (by air it takes 20 minutes).

I walked from Ajaccio, Napoleon Bonaparte's birthplace, to Porto Vecchio and then took a boat from Porto Vecchio to Bonifacio with its chalky cliffs. I had a great train ride from Bastia to Calvi via Ponte Leccia. The train goes through a series of  tunnels, but the local cattle also use the tunnels to escape the summer heat, so the poor old train has to inch its way through, blasting its horn to herd the cattle off the line.

Calvi is a good base to use for daily visits to the "hill towns" up in the mountains where there's always a bar or cafe to grab a bite to eat or drink. Eventually, I took the train back to Bastia and then walked to Cap Corse, stopping at the little town of Erbalunga, which has a lovely Genoese tower .

Lovely Barcaggio demanded a stopover to watch the sunset, and in the morning I walked past a herd of cows cooling themselves on the beach. I flew back to Lyon in France after a beautiful trip etched with priceless memories and plenty of photographs.

BEST BITS Staying at Erbalunga and Calvi.

WORST BITS Treading in the seaweed, just after a cow had left a fresh "message" in it .

BEST TIP Take cash as ATMs are few and far between.
