  • Prisons are full of young and poor petty criminals, report says

    More than 75 per cent of prisoners are aged between 18 and 35, with a majority of them being petty offenders. An audit report into the country's criminal justice system released Monday by Chief Justice David Maraga, shows a high number of poor people are being jailed compared to the rich.

    The report further faults the police for carrying out shoddy investigations, saying some of the cases leading to jail terms should not have ended up in courts.

  • UN: DRC Rights Abuses Spike

    In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations says it recorded a significant increase in the number of human rights violations committed over the past year, and that state security forces were the main perpetrators.

    The spike in violations has been recorded by the U.N. Joint Human Rights Office in its newly-released report for the Congo for 2016. The director of the human rights office, Jose Maria Aranaz, says there was marked deterioration.

  • Congo's Catholic church warns Kabila deal risks falling apart

    A deal struck last month requiring Congo President Joseph Kabila to step down after elections this year risks unraveling if politicians do not quickly reach compromises on implementing the accord, Catholic bishops mediating the talks said on Monday.

    The Dec. 31 deal was greeted as a critical step toward averting a slide into anarchy and possibly civil war in Democratic Republic of Congo over Kabila's decision to remain in power when his mandate expired last month.
