People in parts of Western Australia's Pilbara region are given the all clear by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) regarding a tropical low that earlier prompted a blue alert.

In an update issued this evening, BOM advised the tropical is moving further away from the coast.

"The tropical low may reach tropical cyclone intensity overnight but should not affect the mainland," BOM said.

It said it was now safe to return home, but to take care on roads and obey road closure signs.

The tropical low's intensity is delivery wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour. It is located about 360 kilometres off Exmouth, and moving west at 28kph.

If the system develops into a tropical cyclone, it will be named Alfred.

The BOM predicts the system will track off the north-west coast of WA and move into the Indian Ocean where it will eventually weaken.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said several roads had been closed, including North West Coastal Highway from Port Hedland to Roebourne, with flood warnings in place.

Marble Bar Road has been closed from the Roy Hill Village Access Road to Munjina-Roy Hill Road.

The north of the state has seen heavy rains in recent days, with flood warnings still current in the Kimberley.
