Lexus’ IS sedan for 2017 is now officially out in the open, with the carmaker pulling the covers from the updated model at the Beijing Auto Show.
Described by its maker as “a daring new styling direction”, the new IS is perhaps, in reality, a refreshed version of the model it replaces.
And Lexus agrees, somewhat, saying that the popularity of the IS’s current-generation styling, debuting in 2013, has been such that major changes to the outward appearance were never on the cards.
As previewed in a teaser image last week, the 2017 IS brings new headlights and a reworked look for the front end.
New large air intakes and an altered version of the Lexus ‘spindle’ grille are present, along with a reshaped bonnet.
Lexus says the IS now has a sleeker profile, boosted by new 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels with “bright machine finishes”.
At the rear, the 2017 IS gets new ‘L’-shaped LED tail lamps and rectangular chrome exhaust tips.
Deep Blue Mica and Graphite Black Glass Flake have joined the list of available paint finishes, while Moonstone and Ivory interior colours have been replaced by Chateau.
Elsewhere on the inside, the IS now features a 10.3-inch infotainment screen (previously seven inches) with a new high-resolution monitor. New ‘Enter’ buttons on the centre console also make the updated system easier to use.
The speedometer and tachometer have been restyled, and Lexus has added new stitching to the top of the instrument cluster hood.
Other changes to the new IS include an updated analogue clock, new cup holders and a new, larger leather-wrapped palm rest with stitching for the Remote Touch Interface (RTI).
Lexus confirms the 2017 IS retains its current engine line-up. Buyers in Australia are currently offered the four-cylinder turbocharged 200t, hybrid 300h and V6 petrol-powered IS 350.
