World hunger down
Somewhere around 1.1 billion acres is being cultivated for food
in or within about 12 miles (20 kilometers) of cities. Most of
that land is on the periphery of cities, but 16.6 percent of
these urban farms are in open spaces within the municipal core.

A Vanity
Fair poll finds
that 73% of conservatives and 75% of liberals either make buying
local food a priority or do it when it is convenient. Another
issue that the media ignores, but people find important. We suspect
the results would be even better if local food was idenitified
better.
Genetically
modified crops
While the acreage of genetically
modified crops declined in 2015,
the NY Times
reports that "Three countries the United States,
Brazil and Argentina account for more than three-quarters
of the total global acreage. And only four crops corn,
soybeans, cotton and canola account for the majority of
biotechnology use in agriculture. In many cases, more than 90
percent of those four crops grown in those three countries, and
in other large growers like Canada, India and China, is already
genetically modified, leaving little room for expansion."
