It’s been 15 years since the debut of the second-generation Mini and the three-millionth vehicle has just rolled from the assembly line.
Appropriately, Mini number 3,000,000 was a high-performance, high-tech John Cooper Works Clubman variant with the new ALL4 all-wheel-drive system - the first of this derivative to be produced.
The Mini plant in Oxford, England now employs around 4,500 people and produces a staggering 1,000 cars each day - one almost every minute - and 80 per-cent of them are exported for sale in more than 110 markets globally.
And while final assembly takes place in Oxford, Mini engines are made at Hams Hall, Birmingham and body pressings and sub-assemblies comes from Swindon.
The Mini milestone comes in the centenary year of parent company BMW which has invested £1.75 billion (AU$2.97 billion) in the three plants since 2000.
