When an adorable three-year-old spotted a white haired gentleman in a restaurant she naturally assumed he was Santa Claus.

The man in question, a policeman from Massachusetts, was so moved by the youngster he decided to go along with her assumption.

Posting about the encounter on Facebook page Love What Matters, the man explained:

"When a three year old comes up to you during dinner and thinks you are Santa Claus, you roll with it.

"This beautiful young lady would like a princess Barbie for Christmas," he wrote.

"She also now believes Santa is a policeman between Christmases. Wonderful encounter," he added.

The post has been shared nearly 2000 times, showing that the magic of Christmas is alive and kicking.

Parents have been sharing stories about how their children have also mistaken older gentlemen for the big guy.

"My three-year-old thinks the older gentleman that asks for donations for the Salvation Army is Santa," one mum wrote.

"She runs to say hi to him every time."

Another parent commented: "My son runs up to a man who works at our local cafe every Saturday – he always rolls with it. It's the magic of Christmas."

And of course, some people have been commenting to say that they have also been mistaken for Santa.

"My late husband was a big man with a white beard. He absolutely adored it when kids thought he was Santa. He always had dollar bills in his pocket ... because in the summer Santa treats you to ice cream," wrote one woman.

Another comment reads: "My husband has often been greeted with 'Are you really Santa Claus?' ... he's learnt to say, 'Shh, don't tell anyone, I'm on vacation!'"

Some commenters even claim to have met the real Santa.

"We were fishing in Alaska and saw Santa fishing on the other side of the river," the commenter begins.

"He slipped in, and got soaking wet. We took him to our cabin to warm up and dry out. Sitting there looking at him, and talking to him, you would swear he was Santa! He looked like Santa's pictures, he was very jovial, such a pleasure to visit with," the commenter explains.

"Now we know how and where Santa spends his summer. True story."
